WOOD STRENGTHEN DEFENSIVELY

12 December 2014
BEN MARTIN

Boreham Wood Football Club are delighted to announce another exciting addition to our already talented squad.

Chairman Danny Hunter explained to Media Manager Grant Morris, that a deal has been done and the player in question is the St Albans City defender and Saints club captain Ben Martin.

The Wood Chairman said “getting Ben’s signature is exciting for our club and I know the manager is very pleased. We’re all hoping that Ben’s experience and leadership skills can help us further advance our ambitions. We are a young squad and Ben has twice won promotion out of this division and can add strength to our ranks.. Ian feels Ben’s experience will not only enhance’s our squad but will ease the pressure on our existing two centre half’s, who have been exceptional but it’s a fact they have both had to play every minute of every league game”..

Manager Ian Allinson said “Ben was great for Welling when they won promotion from the Conference South eighteen months ago and he was very good for St Albans City when they came to Meadow Park earlier this season.. I knew our squad was light in the centre half areas and I’ve got away with operating with only two experienced centre half’s in Callum Reynolds and Josh Hill on our books”..

Allinson continued “Its not ideal to play both of my central defenders in pretty much every minute of every league game and that was a massive worry to both myself and my assistant Luke Garrard. That lack of strength was finally exposed after I put an on loan youngster in at centre half against Concord in the Trophy.. I knew if I did not correct this problem, it could well undo much of our good work. My assistant Luke Garrard and myself drew up a list of experienced defensive targets and Ben Martin was high on our list”..

The manager went on. “I’m pleased we’ve strengthened, we’re now strong in all areas and with a busy December, Christmas and New Year programme looming I have great options. Ben is a leader, he is experienced, he is still relatively young. He has a great knack of being in the right place at the right time and he has a record of scoring important goals. I’ve explained to him, he will not walk into my side and will need to work hard as he comes into a great squad. If Ben applies himself though, he’ll add real quality, a winning mentality and greater options to our squad”..

“I’m grateful to the Chairman for backing me once again and it would be nice to repay his faith by putting points on the board throughout December”.. He concluded.
