WOOD RETURN TO THE PLAYOFFS WITH WIN OVER EASTLEIGH

10 February 2018

Boreham Wood lifted themselves back into the playoffs, with a clinical 0-2 win at Eastleigh.

Morgan Ferrier (58) scored on his second debut for the Wood, just five minutes after coming on as a substitute

Bruno Andrade (68) then added a second goal with a coolly converted penalty to confirm the win.

Luke Garrard named an unchanged eleven from the win over Ebbsfleet two weeks ago, as he looked to continue their impressive run

The match was set in blistering conditions and there was an expectedly scrappy nature to the tie. Grant Smith made the first save of the match, diving to push Sam Mathews’ curling free kick around the post.

Looking to combat the conditions, Quigley broke clear of the home defence, he cut inside and crossed, but it was blocked by Gavin Hoyte.

Neither side had been able to get a foothold in the game, but Andrade attempted to change that, taking the ball on the turn, he dragged a shot into the hands of Graham Stack.

Eastleigh had been in impressive form themselves, winning four out of their last five matches and the hosts looked to turn up the heat on Garrard’s team, with Chris Zebroski skimming the side netting from distance.

The hosts went within a whisper of an opener just minutes later, as Ben Williamson headed into the side netting from Ryan Broom’s cross.

With the first half coming to a close, the Wood looked to nick a opener, but Danny Woodards and Andrade went for the same cross and clashed, before Balanta sliced wide. Andrade then nodded a weak header into the hands of stack

Eastleigh started the second half brightly, with two early chances. A mixture of Woodards and Turley scrambled Zebroski’s close range effort off the line to keep the scores level. Smith then done well to push Williamson’s header out of the bottom corner.

The Wood made their first change of the match just seven minutes into the second half and it paid instant dividends. Ferrier had replaced Quigley upfront and made no mistake with his first chance of the game.

The Wood’s record signing took the ball down with one foot, around his marker with the other and flew his strike past Stack to give the Wood the lead.

The opener had given the Wood a boost and they continued to harry the opponents, Balanta swept a low cross into the box, but Andrade’s shot was blocked wide. Balanta met the subsequent corner, but headed it across goal and wide.

A second goal was looming as Andrade earned the Wood a 66th minute penalty. The Forward had nicked the ball from Ryan Cresswell and charged into the box, but the Eastleigh skipper hauled him down in the process.

Andrade stepped up to the take the penalty and struck it into the bottom corner to double the visitor’s advantage.

The home side refused to give up, and would have had their chance were it not for the quick reactions of Smith, who plucked the ball from the feet of Williamson, just five-yards from goal.

The stopper had to be at it again, using his cat-like reflexes to tip Mathew’s freekick over the woodwork. Broom then had a long-range effort rattle the crossbar and go over.

Turley was denied a late goal himself, when his close-range effort from a corner was saved by Stack.

Smith had to be there one final time for the Wood, denying Mathews excellently from close-range.
