Welcome, Josef Yarney!

6 February 2025

Boreham Wood Football Club are delighted to announce the arrival of imposing and hard-working defender, Josef Yarney. The experienced centre-half joins the club as a free agent, subject to international clearance, and will wear the number 29 shirt for Luke Garrard’s side.

After coming through the youth setups of Everton and Newcastle United, Josef excelled during a loan move to Chesterfield, earned a permanent move to the Spireites in 2019 and went on to play a key role in their 2020/21 National League play-off finish. Following his time in Derbyshire, the centre-half embarked on moves to Weymouth and Indian Super League side, Punjab before a successful 2022/23 campaign with Oldham Athletic, after which he was awarded their Supporters’ Player of the Season.

His form was enough for League Two side, Tranmere Rovers to secure his services in the summer of 2023. Following a year of playing in the Football League, Josef would once again move abroad, this time to Hilal Al-Quds on a short-term deal before returning to England to join the Wood. Josef brings a wealth of defensive experience with him and will no doubt further strengthen our defensive options and further boost our promotion ambitions.

Luke Garrard commented, saying: “Josef is a high calibre of player, has played above the level we’re in currently and comes here with a great pedigree. Having played as a right-sided centre half, central centre-half and right back, he has many positions available to us.

We currently have a suspension and injury in that key area and, with a system that employs three centre-halves at times, we can’t isolate ourselves to limited numbers. He brings a wealth of experience at such a young age and fingers crossed he can have a successful time here.”
