WOOD UNDER 16’S CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE

18 April 2016
UNDER 16 CUP

With two wins in one week, ‘Wood’s’ successful Under 16’s added EJA League glory to their EJA Cup Winners and Herts County Cup Runners-up accolades this season.

‘Wood’ hosted Hoddesdon Town on Wednesday at Meadow Park under lights, as many of ‘Wood’s’ players enjoyed playing within the Stadium at Boreham Wood for the very first time. An experience they will get used in years to come as they progress into the Under 18’s and beyond in years to come.

‘Wood’ come out the traps fiercely, taking the lead within the first minute when Lucas Kennedy-Sinclair took off down the right side before delivering a pin-point cross for Tola Showumni who tapped in from close range against his former side.

The young side continued to push on and added to their lead with goals from talisman Alex Morgan and a thunderous strike from Luke Lane to give the ‘Wood’ a 3-0 lead going into half time.

The second half was a much tighter affair, but ‘Wood’ again edged the half in terms of scoring when Man of the Match Lucas Kennedy-Lucas added to his assist earlier in the game with a penalty, capping off his fine display. Full time 4-0.

‘Wood’ then entered Sunday’s fixture against Wingate & Finchley knowing that a point would secure the League Title despite results elsewhere. The first half was a very scrappy encounter and credit Wingate who harried and hassled ‘Wood’ players all over the park, forcing errors and mistakes.

Wingate were rewarded for their hard work and determination when a misplaced pass from a ‘Wood’ player gifted Wingate with the ball in the final third, and after some lackluster defending from the ‘Wood’ backline the Wingate midfielder finished expertly into the bottom left hand corner of the net. This goal gave Wingate added confidence and wind behind their sails and they were unlucky not to extend their lead but for a fine save from Tarell Annakie in the ‘Wood’ goal. Half time 1-0 Wingate.

After a half time dressing down from the ‘Wood’ Manager Cameron Mawer, ‘Wood’ started the 2nd half much brighter and leveled soon after the restart with a superb finish from Ejike Akubude scoring his 21st goal of the season.

‘Wood’ continued to push on and their quality and fitness come to fruition with quick fire late goals from Benjy Aghadiuno and Daniel Creese sealing a 3-1 victory for the young ‘Wood’ side and clinching the Title.

‘Wood’ Manager Cameron Mawer said “Back in the summer we started with an Under 16’s age group at Boreham Wood. Beginning the season with 20 players coming from across Hertfordshire and London, some have come and some have gone, and we now have a squad of 16 extremely talented players.

“To have brought into the clubs beliefs and ethos so quickly has been amazing. This has been capped off with the League and Cup double, 6 involved in the FA youth cup, beaten a category 1 Academy, 1 trained with the First Team and countless players involved with the Reserves, which is a credit to everyone involved. I am extremely proud of all the boys.”
