U18’S PROGRESS IN FA YOUTH CUP

23 September 2014

Wood’s U18’s progressed into the next round of the FA Youth Cup after overcoming Thurrock in a Penalty shoot out after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

Wood started bright with an early chance from 2nd year Mohammed Faal whose effort just evaded the far post, Wood continued to dominate but couldn’t convert possession stats into chances.

Thurrock then took the lead against the run of play when they worked a great move down the right for a pin point cross which found Thurrock’s front man who coolly slotted home.

Boreham Wood reacted superbly when 1st Year Kyle Roberts who was man of the match on the night jinxed past the Thurrock defence to only drag his shot wide of the mark.

Wood Gaffer Luke Garrard made two subs on the half hour mark with both making an instant impact. Attacking midfielder Keanu Brooks found himself deep in the Thurrock half  clipped a ball of real quality into Mohammed’s path for the lone striker to drive his shot past the advancing keeper.

Half time 1-1

Wood started the second half as they ended the first on the front foot. An early corner routine worked to free up Quba Gordon who directed his header goal bound only for the Thurrock number 1 to spill his effort into the back of the net.

Wood could of increased the lead when James Akintunde worked a great one two with Keanu Brooks only to be denied by a great save from the Thurrock stopper.

Thurrock soon levelled when a deep free kick wasn’t dealt with and the second ball was fired into the back of the net.

Wood still applied the pressure throughout the remainder of the game but could not break through the  well drilled Thurrock defence.

Penalty kicks would be the decider..

Wood held their nerve and ran out 4-3 winners on the night after Alfie Boal pulled off a great save to give Wood the advantage..

Goal scorer Quba Gordon had the deciding penalty to win the tie and calmly curled his effort into the top right hand corner.

Wood now face either Potters Bar or Cheshunt at Home in the next round.
