REST IN PEACE, LES VARNEY

3 January 2023

Boreham Wood FC was deeply saddened to hear that Les Varney, a star player for us back in the late 1960’s, passed away on New Year’s Eve, after a long illness.

Les was one of the most prolific goal scorers in the Club’s history and his time with us coincided with Chairman Danny Hunter’s Father, Micky Hunter being the Club’s Manager.

Les made his debut for us on 17 August 1968, here at Meadow Park, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Eastbourne Town. That goal set the scene for a record-breaking season in which Les scored 33 goals in 41 games, including four goals on the final day when a 5-0 win at Harrow Borough that clinched the Athenian League Division Two championship

At the end of the season, Les left to join the then mighty Enfield but returned the following year to play a further two seasons for us, by then as members of the Athenian League Premier Division, following a further promotion in the year Les was away.

Les then played for Barnet, Finchley and Hoddesdon before returning to us for a final swansong in the 1977-78 season. His career record was 56 goals in 149 games.

We were delighted to welcome Les and his family as guests of the Club back in 2016 when we played Notts County in the FA Cup 1st Round.

On behalf of Danny, all at Boreham Wood FC would like to pass their sincere condolences to Edie and all members of Les’ family.

A full tribute to Les will appear in a forthcoming matchday programme.
