PETER SMITH APPOINTED AS CLUB PRESIDENT

1 January 1970

We are delighted to announce that our longest serving club official Peter Smith has been appointed Club President, following the death of our beloved Bill O’Neill in April.

Chairman Danny Hunter made the announcement by saying, “I knew instantly that Peter was the only person who could possibly replace Bill, and invited him to accept the role a few days after we heard the very sad news about our founding father. Thankfully Peter, who is also a great friend, agreed immediately, but we both decided that the announcement should be held back for a few months as a mark of respect to Bill and his family.

The Chairman continued, “Peter has given Bill, Phil Wallace and myself a lifetime of wisdom and club service, from his first official appointment as Press Secretary back in 1966, after which he has been Club Secretary on three occasions, Match Secretary twice, Programme Editor and had several other very important advisory roles, especially as part of my inner circle.

“Peter is a trusted mentor, a dear, dear friend, and despite moving away from Borehamwood in 1967 and now living on the south coast nearly 100 miles away, his love for all things Boreham Wood Football Club never diminishes.

“For me, knowing his lifetime of memories and love for the club, it made it a very simple choice to ask him to take over as President from Bill. It is the highest office I can bestow on anyone at the club and so I am absolutely delighted he has agreed”.

Peter himself said, “I am immensely honoured and privileged to be invited by Danny to become Club President. It is, of course, a bittersweet moment as the honour has only happened because we have lost my lifelong friend Bill, and in any event, he is impossible to replace. I will do my best, as always, to represent the club in the same outstanding way that Bill did for so long.

“I am also saddened that my late wife is not here to see me become our Club President but I know she will be raising a glass up on high, and fortunately I have two lovely daughters Nicola and Vanessa to share the honour with.”
In the early part of the new season “An Interview with our new Club President” will be filmed and shown on BWFC TV.
