Man of the Match: Junior Dixon
EMPHATIC WIN FOR THE WOOD
Two goals from Junior Dixon and another from Tom Whelan gave Boreham Wood their third win in four matches at the start of the season in the Vanarama National League South.
Boreham Wood Head Coach Ross Jenkins made three changes from Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw at Dorking Wanderers with Charles Clayden coming in for Femi Ilesamni at left back, Abdul Abdulmalik replacing Mo Sagaf and Junior Dixon replacing Lee Ndlovu up front. Tyrone Marsh dropped into a deeper role with Abdulmalik partnering Dixon up front, both starting their first games for Boreham Wood.
FIRST HALF
The visitors came out of the blocks with real confidence with some good interplay between Malachi Linton and Tom Bearwish in the first few minutes. On four minutes Charles Clayden clipped the top of the Terras crossbar with a miss hit cross. Three minutes later Weymouth had a good chance when Corey Jordan played in Linton who clipped the outside of Nathan Ashmore’s post. On thirteen minutes Clayden was through on goal but was denied by Terras keeper Billy Terrell. On twenty minutes Wood took the lead, and it was all down to the new look strike force. An excellent run by Abdulmalik ended with him picking out Junior Dixon who finished cooly past keeper Terrell.
The visitors were still very much in the game and six minutes later they were unlucky not to equalise when a fantastic curling effort by Euan Pollock who hit the Boreham Wood post with keeper Ashmore well beaten. On thirty-two minutes a Josh Hare cross was headed wide by Charlie O’Connell. Three minutes later, another chance went begging for the visitors when the dangerous Linton couldn’t get his shot on target while trying to copy the curl that his teammate Pollock produced before. Just before the interval Wood had a good chance to double their lead who the ball ricocheted off Erico Sousa into the path of Tyrone Marsh who couldn’t keep his shot down.
HALF TIME: BOREHAM WOOD 1 WEYMOUTH 0
Boreham Wood came out after the break with a spring in their step and started to dominate proceedings. Tom Whelan doubled Wood’s lead five minutes after the restart with a delightful free kick. They extended their lead further on sixty-three minutes when Dixon added his second with a neat finish. Three minutes later Marsh’s shot was deflected onto the crossbar. With the game seemingly won, Ross Jenkins made a spate of substitutions with Salisbury Town away only two days away. Although this was the right thing to do understand the circumstances, it did effect Boreham Wood flow at this stage of the match.
The Terras to their credit, kept going and had several chances to reduce the deficit soon after Boreham Wood’s third goal. Tom Bearwish, Pollock and Ben Greenwood all went close but were unable to trouble Ashmore in the Wood goal. On seventy-four minutes Wood should have added a fourth when a Cameron Coxe cross was met by Lee Ndlovu who fired wide. If Ndlovu had left it to Clayden, he would have had a seemingly straightforward finish. A minutes later Ezio Touray fired just wide for the visitors. Brandon Goodship then fired over from a freekick. On eighty-one minutes Coxe’s shot was cleared off the line by Greenwood. Five minutes later Greenwood forced a good save from Ashmore before Fareed Salifu shot wide in the last minutes of stoppage time.
FULL-TIME: BOREHAM WOOD 3 WEYMOUTH 0
It was a good win for Ross Jenkins men against a Weymouth side who contributed a lot to a good game of football. If the visitors got their finishing right, the game would have been a lot closer. Junior Dixon had an impressive first start with two goals and some very good centre forward play. He should get a lot of goals at this level. With a trip to Salisbury Town only two days away, Ross Jenkins will want his team to carry on their impressive start to the season.
