WOOD OVERCOME EARLY SCARE TO BEAT KING’S LYNN TOWN
A double for Josh Rees and a goal for Tyrone Marsh completed the turnaround after an early goal from Malachi Linton, making it seven points in a week after beating King’s Lynn Town..
After the tremendous victory over FC Halifax Town during the week, the Wood took that momentum and looked to come out the blocks quickly, putting plenty of early pressure onto their opponents. They were unable to find a way through though and could only fashion a few half chances before King’s Lynn took an early lead against the run of play. Aaron Jones got down the left-hand side and put a ball on a plate for Michael Clunan who forced Taye Ashby-Hammond into an excellent save, but the ball fell to Jones who fired the Linnet’s second attempt towards goal where Linton was waiting to touch it home after just 11 minutes.
The Wood looked to hit back immediately as Kane Smith played a lovely ball through to Danilo Orsi, but his first touch was too heavy and allowed Jones to collect. Boreham Wood enjoyed most of the possession for a next spell and continued to put pressure on but were unable to break their opponents down, with King’s Lynn defending well and restricting the Wood to half chances at best.
As the game approached the half hour mark the game begun to spring to life. Linton took the ball under control and struck a powerful effort at goal that Ashby-Hammond was behind, just a minute before Tyrone Marsh struck a fierce drive that went just over the crossbar. Will Evans then went close from a corner when he should have done better, before Charles missed a golden opportunity that the Linnets would soon pay the price for. After being played through on goal and with just David Stephens to beat, the stand in captain made an excellent challenge to win the ball and deny Charles, before the hosts went up the other end and hit straight back. Marsh won the ball in the middle of the park and found Smith who’s initial cross was blocked, but luckily the ball came out to James Comley who put a ball on a plate for Josh Rees to head home his ninth of the season just four minutes before the break.
The Wood were keen to avoid the banana skin after a disappointing first half performance and got the second half off to a bang as Rees gave his side the lead just three minutes after the interval. It all came from Comley once again following an effort from Orsi from close range, but a brilliant challenge from Comley kept things alive with Rees eventually tapping home his second of the afternoon.
The hosts were in control, and although Rees was forced off with a knock, they showed no signs of slowing down. A free kick was won just before the hour mark when Smith was hacked down by Oliver Scott, with Frankie Raymond’s cross being cleared only as far as Marsh who fired into the top corner to make it three. From here on out the game became quiet, with the hosts comfortable and the visitors struggling to break them down. They let the Linnets have more of the ball to allow them to focus on remaining resilient at the back, although late chances for Boden and Marsh saw them go close to a fourth.
The game was wrapped up earlier on though, getting the job done after a long week that brought three games in a short space of time. Victory was unable to elevate the Wood to the summit of the National League table owing to results elsewhere, but they are just two points away from an unrelenting Stockport County at the top, however have two games in hand over the Hatters. Attention now switches to the biggest game in the Club’s history, as former Premier League side AFC Bournemouth awaits in the 4th Round of the FA Cup next Sunday.
