MATCH REPORT: CHESTERFIELD (H)

Boreham Wood 0-2 Chesterfield
Mangata Pay UK Stadium, Meadow Park
7th October 3.00pm, Vanarama National League

In a one-sided encounter at Mangata Pay UK Stadium, Meadow Park, it was Chesterfield who maintained their charge at the top of the Vanarama National League table with a convincing 2-0 win against a below parr Boreham Wood. A goal in each half from Liam Mandeville and Joe Quigley was enough to secure the points for the visitors.

Luke Garrard made one change from Wednesday night’s 1-0 win against Hartlepool United with Tom Whelan coming in for Angelo Balanta.

Following some good early possession from the Spireites, Liam Mandeville was played through on goal but was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Femi Ilesamni. Jeff King forced a good reaction save from Nathan Ashmore, eight minutes later. On fourteen minutes a lovely cross from Brandon Horton was nearly met by Will Grigg for the visitors, but he just couldn’t get there in time. Three minutes later, Tom Naylor’s shot was spilled by Ashmore, before the Wood keeper collected it at the second attempt. Liam Mandeville fired wide on nineteen minutes.

Boreham Wood looked like they’d weathered the storm and at this point of the game and started to show more attacking intent. Tyrone Marsh went close on twenty-five minutes and Ilesamni, fired over the crossbar five minutes later. However, on thirty-four minutes, the Spireites took the lead when an excellent Ryan Colclough cross was headed home by an unmarked Mandeville at the far post. The Wood defence had just switched off for a crucial moment. Five minutes later, Chesterfield should have doubled their lead from the penalty spot when Jack Payne brought down Mandeville in the penalty area. However Will Grigg’s spot kick went way over the crossbar. On forty-four minutes, Grigg played in Naylor, but the Spireites midfielder shot wide when well placed.

HALF TIME: BOREHAM WOOD 0-1 CHESTERFIELD

The visitors started the second half with the same attacking intent as they did in the first. They should have added to their lead on forty-seven minutes when Ryan Colclough missed a good chance when put through by Jeff King. Three minutes later Armando Dobra, just failed to get on the end of Horton’s cross for the Spireites. On sixty-three minutes Ashmore, produced an excellent save to deny Dobra. Seven minutes later Jeff King’s freekick was comfortably saved by Ashmore.

On eighty-four minutes, Chesterfield made sure of the points when their two substitutes combined. Michael Jacobs played the ball into former Wood loanee Joe Quigley who finished well. Boreham, Wood were not done yet and might have got a goal back two minutes later. Marsh cut inside and struck a shot that looked like going in before some heroic defending from Spireites skipper Jamie Grimes kept them out. This was Boreham Wood last chance of the game and Chesterfield held out comfortably for the win.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Boreham Wood. However, they were up against the best side to grace Meadow Park this season. Despite the visitor’s dominance, Boreham Wood battled hard but came up short in the end against a dominant opponent. Boreham Wood have now got a two week break from the Vanarama National League as they welcome Welling United in the FA Cup next Saturday. Luke Gararrd will want to see a better performance and a victory from his side to breed confidence into his players before an important run of league fixtures.
