FIRST DEFEAT ON THE ROAD
Boreham Wood succumb to their first away defeat of the season due to two excellent free kick goals from Jeff King and Darren Oldaker for the Spireites
Wood Manager Luke Garrard named an unchanged starting line up from Tuesday night’s 1-1 at Dagenham and Redbridge.
First Half
Boreham Wood got off to an excellent start and attacked the host with intent. The outstanding Cameron Coxe was causing Chesterfield all sorts of problems down the right and it was his cross that created a chance for Danny Newton after five minutes. However, Newton’s effort was deflected wide. Newton had another chance, six minutes later, but this time, his shot was blocked.
On twenty-two minutes, the Spireites had their first real chance. After some lovely interplay between Branden Horton and Armando Dobra, they created a chance for an unmarked George Cooper whose header went wide. Seven minutes later, Femi Ilesamni was off target for Boreham Wood. On thirty-one minutes, Chesterfield took the lead when a Jeff King free kick from outside the penalty area, gave Nathan Ashmore no chance in the Wood goal. The goal knocked the stuffing out of Boreham Wood who didn’t quite have the same flow, from then onwards. The hosts controlled possession for the rest of the first half, without looking like adding to their lead.
Second Half
Boreham Wood had an excellent chance to equalise on forty-seven minutes when Dennon Lewis’s cross found Tyrone Marsh who’s short crashed off the crossbar. Ten minutes later, Dobra had a good chance for the hosts, but Ashmore was equal to it before Ilesamni was able to clear. Two minutes later, Ashmore brought Darren Oldaker down in the penalty area. Former Wood striker Kabongo Tshimanga stepped up to take the penalty, but Ashmore was equal to it, diving to his right to keep his former teammate’s shot out. Buoyed on by this, Boreham Wood went up the other end where Newton was just wide with his effort. On sixty-six minutes, Jeff King took another free kick from the edge of the area for the hosts. This time, he was just wide. Two minutes later, David Stephens headed, straight at Spireites keeper Ross Fitzsimons when well placed.
On seventy-two minutes, the hosts finished the game as a contest with another brilliant free kick, this time, Oldaker found the top corner of Ashmore’s goal, sending the home supporters into raptures. Apart from substitute, Danny Elliot going close, Boreham Wood weren’t able to react positively and the hosts saw out the game in comfort.
It was a disappointing day on the road for Luke Garrard’s men. They started well but unfortunately couldn’t create much against an outstanding Spireites defence. You can’t deny the quality of Chesterfield’s two free kicks though. The Vanarama National League takes a break now as Luke Garrard’s men look forward to the First Round FA Cup tie at home against Eastleigh next Saturday.
