EMPHATIC WOOD INTO THE FIRST ROUND
A comprehensive 4-0 win against Carshalton Athletic ensured Boreham Wood are into the First Round of the FA Cup for the 11th time in 13 seasons. Two goals from Kwesi Appiah and goals by both Abdul Abdulmalik and Charlie O’Connell were enough for the win.
Luke Garrard made one change to his starting lineup from last Saturday’s win at Chippenham Town, with Abdul Abdulmalik replacing Tyrone Marsh, who dropped to the bench.
FIRST HALF
Boreham Wood got off to a fantastic start by taking the lead on three minutes when some excellent approach play from Femi Ilesanmi, Abdul Abdulmalik and Erico Sousa created a chance for Kwesi Appiah, who made no mistake at the near post. Wood controlled possession after the goal and should have added to their lead on eighteen minutes, but Charlie O’Connell headed just wide from a Tom Whelan corner. Seven minutes later, a Whelan free kick took a deflection off a Robins defender before going narrowly wide.
On thirty-two minutes, the visitors had their first chance when a cross from Mason Saunders-Henry was struck just wide by Oliver Hamstead. Six minutes later, O’Connell headed just wide again from another Whelan corner. Wood added a second just before the break when Junior Dixon dispossessed Paris Hamilton-Dowes in the Robins’ defence before squaring the ball to Abdulmalik, who made no mistake from close range.
SECOND HALF
Shortly after the restart, Robins forward Fabio Saraiva tried his luck from distance but was off target. On fifty-seven minutes, Wood added a third, and it was third time lucky for O’Connell, who had been off target twice with headers from corners but made no mistake this time from a Whelan delivery.
Wood got their fourth on seventy minutes with Appiah’s second of the match. A delightful Sousa pass picked out substitute Jayden Richardson, whose inch-perfect cross was met by Appiah at the far post. Tyrone Marsh forced Robins keeper Mackenzie Foley into a good save on seventy-seven minutes after some good approach play by Ilesanmi. Wood saw the game out easily and now look forward to the draw for the First Round on Monday evening.
It was an emphatic victory for Luke Garrard’s team and his fifth win in a row, in all competitions, since returning to the club. A word for Kwesi Appiah, who has now scored six goals in six matches since returning to the starting lineup. He couldn’t get into the matchday squad under previous manager Ross Jenkins.
