WOOD LOSE AS INJURIES MOUNT UP
On a disappointing night at LVBet Stadium Meadow Park, Boreham Wood were beaten 2-0 by Bromley with a goal in each half. Even more worrying for Luke Garrard’s men, they were hit by three more injuries to their already depleted squad
Luke Garrard made two changes from Saturday’s 3-1 win over Maidenhead United with Josh Rees coming in for the injured Dion Kelly-Evans at right wing back and Danny Newton replacing Tyrone Marsh up front. The returning hero Bruno Andrade took his place on the bench.
First Half
Boreham Wood started the game on the front foot with Danny Newton and Lee Ndlovu causing problems for the Bromley defence. Following a good move Newton shot straight at Thomas Smith in the Ravens goal on eleven minutes. On twenty-three minutes the visitors threatened when former Wood player Corey Whitely played in Michael Cheek whose header was easily gathered by Nathan Ashmore. Four minutes later Zak Brunt had a good run but he shot straight at Smith in the Bromley goal.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play after half an hour when Michael Cheek played in Adam Marriott who finished well. The goal appeared to knock the stuffing out of Boreham Wood who weren’t as effective from then onwards. The outstanding Lee Ndlovu who was taken off on Saturday with a hamstring injury, appeared to have a recurrence of the injury and went off soon after Bromley scored. While they didn’t create anything else, the visitors were very much on the front foot for the rest of the first half
Second Half
David Stephens, so influential at the heart of defence over the last few weeks was replaced at half time by Conor Stevens due to another injury. The visitors continued to dominate possession immediately after the break. However on fifty-one minutes Femi Ilesamni was denied by an excellent Thomas Smith save. Ten minutes later, the Ravens doubled their lead when former Barnet forward, Marriott scored again after Cheek’s header came off the post. On sixty-nine minutes, Danny Newton just failed to convert from a Brunt corner. Then Josh Rees’s shot was deflected wide. A minute later, it was Boreham Wood’s best chance of the half when Dennon Lewis shot just wide, following an excellent run.
The visitors might have added to their lead on seventy-five minutes when Jude Arthurs fired over when well placed. On eighty-seven minutes, Danny Elliot was just off target with a header for Boreham Wood. Just as the referee signalled nine minutes of added time, Cheek was denied but a brilliant Ashmore save when one on one. However, during that move, Dennon Lewis appeared to suffer a serious facial injury which held up play for a further ten minutes as the Boreham Wood medical staff made sure he was okay before taking him off. When play resumed, Arthurs had another very good chance for the Raven, before referee Scott Tallis called time on proceedings.
It was a disappointing defeat for Boreham Wood who played their best football before Bromley scored. Unlike against Maidstone on Saturday, they were unable to turn round a deficit against an extremely well organised Bromley side. The most worrying thing for Luke Garrard is the three injuries sustained on the night. Lee Ndlovu, David Stephens and Dennon Lewis may be doubts for Wealdstone which will mean Luke Garrard will have to shuffle his pack further in order to get Boreham Wood back to winning ways.
