The Skrill South

Boreham Wood    4    Chelmsford City    3

by John D. Gill

Boreham Wood recalled Skipper Sam Cox, recovered from injury, to the starting line-up against Chelmsford City.    Wood attacked relegation threatened Chelmsford City straight from the kick off, and in the third minute of the game they took a 1 – 0 lead.

Junior Morias ran clear on the right and crossed to Lee Angol, who smashed the ball into the net.

Chelmsford City levelled the score within four minutes.    Matthew Lock’s swirling thirty-five yard free kick surprisingly deceived James Russell and went into the net just under the crossbar.    Soon afterwards an alert Chelmsford defender cleared the ball off the goal line, following a corner to Wood.

Lee Angol restored Wood’s lead after sixteen minutes, when he beat the last defender and slotted the ball past Carl Pentney.    Two minutes later Matty Whichelow forced a brilliant diving save from Pentney, with a tremendous left footed shot.

Chelmsford kept battling and forced their first corner kick midway through the half, and on the half hour Tom Davis curled a free kick just wide of the far post.    Meanwhile at the other end a Graeme Montgomery free kick was punched behind for a corner kick by Pentney.

In the thirty-eighth minute Lee Angol sent Matty Whichelow clear and his shot was deflected in off Mark Haines.    The goals kept coming and three minutes later Callum Reynolds was adjudged to have fouled Mark Hughes in the penalty area.    Christian Smith made no mistake with his spot kick.    Then in stoppage time a Lee Angol shot struck the outside of a goalpost.

Wood continued to attack after the break and increased their lead to 4 – 2 after fifty-eight minutes.    Greg Morgan passed to Matty Whichelow who scored with a magnificent twenty yard shot into the far corner of the net.    Pentney then made a diving save to prevent Lee Angol from completing a hat-trick.    Whichelow and Morias then both had shots blocked.

Chelmsford kept the game alive seven minutes from the end as Luke Callander powerfully headed home a Matthew Lock free kick at the far post.    Then Mark Hughes headed just over the Wood crossbar.    The visitors kept the pressure on Wood in the closing stages and forced four successive corners in stoppage time.

The Wood defence held firm and the team went on to complete a “double” over Chelmsford City.    Ian Allinson commented after the game “It was a very tough game, but in the end we got the three points and that is the most important thing at this stage of the Season.”
