MATCH PREVIEW – WREXHAM AFC (H)

1 May 2022

Boreham Wood v Wrexham AFC
Monday 2nd May 2022, 3.00pm
LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

THE CONTEXT

This Monday, the Wood kick-off the final month of the season with a large say in the title race, facing off against promotion hopefuls Wrexham after overcoming league leaders Stockport County last time out.

The Dragons sit second in the National League table after losing just one of their last 18 games in all competitions, with just a point separating them from Stockport although they have played one more game than their rivals.

Wood shocked the non-league by ending Stockport’s 17-game unbeaten home run to seal an impressive victory in Greater Manchester on the weekend, and will be keen to follow it up with revenge on Wrexham after losing twice in Wales this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
BEN TOZER

A Plymouth Argyle academy product, Ben Tozer began his career with Swindon Town but made just a couple of first team appearances before he made the switch to Newcastle United. Three years on Tyneside saw the bulk of his game time out on loan at Northampton Town, eventually joining the Cobblers permanently where he remained for a further four years and was a regular barring a brief loan spell at Colchester United. He would play over 100 times for the club before enjoying spells at Yeovil Town, Newport County and Cheltenham Town, prior to his move to Wrexham in 2021.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
JORDAN DAVIES

Wrexham-born midfielder Jordan Davies joined the club’s academy system at a young age and worked his way up the ranks, eventually being named on the bench for the first time at the age of 18 after a successful loan spell with Bangor City. He attracted the interest of Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion who completed a deal to sign him, helping the Seagulls’ Under-23’s win promotion to the Premier League 2. He would return to Wrexham in the summer of 2020 despite interest from EFL clubs, winning Young Player of the Season for 2020/21.

“THE FINISHER”
PAUL MULLIN

After spending time in the academies of both Everton and Liverpool, Paul Mullin later moved to Huddersfield Town where he progressed through the ranks but was released without making a senior appearance, following a loan spell at Vauxhall Motors. He would join Morecambe and enjoyed further spells with Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers, however it was with Cambridge United where he began to establish himself with 36 goals in 56 appearances, helping fire the club to promotion to League One. Mullin made a shock move to Wrexham in July 2021, and he has scored 21 goals so far this season.

LAST TIME WE MET

Wrexham AFC 4 – 2 Boreham Wood
Tuesday 8th March 2022
Racecourse Ground, Vanarama National League

The Wood followed up their historic trip to Everton in the FA Cup Fifth Round with defeat away at Wrexham, with three second half goals sealing the result.

Ollie Palmer got the Dragons up and running when he headed in Luke Young’s corner after just 15 minutes, but Scott Boden cancelled it out shortly before half time. Their lead was restored just after the hour-mark through Aaron Hayden before three goals in quick succession saw their lead twice extended by David Jones and Paul Mullin either side of Tyrone Marsh’s strike, leaving the Wood fifth in the National League table.
