THE CONTEXT
This afternnon, Wood return from a short break in match play as they host Woking in a crucial National League fixture at the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park.
The Cards sit in a reasonable 15th and come into this fixture in decent form having won three of their last four games to end a nine game winless run, although they did lose last time out at home to highflying Solihull Moors.
Wood tasted defeat last time out at fellow promotion hopefuls Notts County but will be keen to get back to winning ways after a difficult run starting with Woking this weekend.

JOE MCNERNEY
A Woking Academy product, Joe McNerney began his career with the Cards at the age of 16 and made his senior debut three years later, before experiencing loan spells away from the Kingfield Stadium with Corinthian Casuals and Ashford Town. He would become a key figure in the Cards promotion bid the following season, and helped them achieve the feat in 2011/12 after a three-year absence from the National League. The defender made over 200 appearances for Woking but opted to depart after nine years to join Crawley Town and made 140 appearances over a six-year spell, before returning to the Kingfield Stadium in the summer of 2021.

MAX KRETZSCHMAR
Having initially spent time with the Southampton Academy, Max Kretzshmar graduated from the Wycombe Wanderers youth setup and featured for the Chairboys over four years. After being released, a 20-goal haul in 2017/18 for Hampton & Richmond Borough was sandwiched in between two spells at Woking, helping the Club stay in the National League with a goal in a 1-1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge that secured their survival in 2016/17 before returning to the National League South in 2018, where he helped them win promotion back to the National League via the play-offs. He has played over 100 times for the Cards.

After coming through the ranks at St Albans City, Inih Effiong joined Northwood before twice bouncing between the Saints and Boreham Wood. Loans with Hitchin Town and Chesham United saw him join the latter permanently, before stints with Hayes & Yeading United, Dunstable Town, Burnham, Arlesey Town, Biggleswade Town and Hertford Town followed, as he attracted interest from clubs higher up the pyramid. Spells with Barrow, Woking and Ross County preceded two prolific seasons with Dover Athletic, but a move to Stevenage ended with loan moves to Barnet and Notts County before he returned to the Kingfield Stadium last summer.

The Wood came out of the blocks in spectacular fashion to overcome Woking with two early goals from Kane Smith and Gus Mafuta. It was the former who got the visitors up and running with less than a minute gone, before Mafuta headed home a second ten minutes later. Woking grew into it towards the end of the half, and were gifted two lifelines when Will Evans was saw red before Inih Effiong was awarded a penalty, but Max Kretzschmar was unable to convert the spot kick and the Wood were able to hold out for another crucial three points.
