Boreham Wood v Weymouth
Saturday 22nd January 2022, KO 3.00pm
LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League
THE CONTEXT
This Saturday, Wood look to continue their unbeaten run as they host relegation battlers Weymouth at the LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park.
The Terras are down in 21st place and have failed to win a league game since October, losing eight of their last nine games in all competitions. This prompted them to dismiss former Manager Brian Stock, but they have swiftly replaced him by appointing Oxford City David Oldfield earlier this week
Wood returned to a top three position after their midweek victory over Wealdstone last week, before rounding up an incredible 8 days that saw us advance to the last 32 of the FA Cup, the last 16 of the FA Trophy and regain their position in the National League’s top 3 with a penalty shootout win over Maidstone United in the Trophy.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
“THE DESTROYER”
OMAR MUSSA
Belgian-born midfielder Omar Mussa began his career in the youth team of KV Mechelen, but moved to England in 2019 when he joined Walsall. His brief stint with the Saddlers would come to an end after just half-a-season with just a single Football League appearance to his name, making the switch to Dover Athletic in October 2020. His time at the Crabble was cut short after the Club’s decision to not play any more matches in an COVID interrupted 2020/21 season. Mussa moved to Weymouth in the summer of 2021.
“THE PLAYMAKER”
SEAN SHIELDS
After beginning his career with Tottenham Hotspur, Sean Shields enjoyed spells with other North London-based sides Cockfosters and Potters Bar Town, as well as Rushden & Diamonds, before shining for St Albans City. He earnt a move to League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge, but returned to St Albans on loan and then joined Ebbsfleet United, eventually on a permanent basis. Chelmsford City, Margate, Hemel Hempstead Town, Maidstone United, Boreham Wood and Notts County would all sign him Sean a temporary basis before his five-year stint with Ebbsfleet came to an end in the summer of 2020, with Weymouth being his next destination.
“THE FINISHER”
BRADLEY ASH
Former Wood striker Bradley Ash began his career with Weston-Super-Mare, thrusting himself into the spotlight in the 2015/16 season with his 14 goals in 14 games which earned Ash a move to League One side Barnsley. He netted a further 19 goals while back on loan with the Seagulls in 2016/17 before joining Boreham Wood initially on loan, and signed permanently at the end of his Tykes contract. He returned to Weston-Super-Mare for a third spell on loan in 2018 prior to permanent stints with Hereford United and Chippenham Town. Ash returned to the National League when he joined Weymouth last summer.
LAST TIME WE MET
Weymouth 0 – 2 Boreham Wood
Saturday 21st August 2021
Vanarama National League
The Bob Lucas Stadium
A 2-0 victory over Weymouth saw the Wood kick off the 2021/22 National League campaign in style. The Wood came out the blocks quickly and took the lead after just nine minutes, when Smith fired us ahead with a fine strike from outside the area into the top corner. A real contender for goal of the season on the opening day. A resolute defence kept Weymouth at bay as they looked to hit back, but the Wood’s dominance paid off as Marsh doubled our lead five minutes before half time. Weymouth still tried to grow into the game, but the two-goal deficit allowed the Wood to see out a deserved victory.
