Match preview: Weston-super-Mare (A)

18 October 2024

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men make the 3-hour-long trip to North Somerset for our Vanarama National League South fixture away to Weston-Super-Mare, kicking off at 15:00.

Last season for the Seagulls

Last season in the Vanarama National League South, Scott Bartlett’s men finished in 13th place. This was their first season back in the division after sealing promotion by winning the Southern South Premier South in the 2022/23 campaign.

Form guide

The Wood travel to the Optima Stadium to face an in-form Weston Super Mare side, a side who have won 4 of their last 5 matches. At the beginning of the month, the Seagulls travelled to Chippenham Town for an FA Cup third round qualifying match, where they were held to a 1-1 draw, taking them to a replay. Weston Super Mare got over the line in a 1-0 victory through a header from Brandon Bak to reach the next round.

A return to league action was next, as Scott Bartlett’s men travelled to Welling, where they won 3-1. In the Somerset Premier Cup, the Seagulls hosted Keynsham Town in an 8-0 thrashing of the visitors. Finally, to reach the first round of the FA Cup, Scott Bartlett’s side travelled to Lowestoft Town and came away with a 3-1 victory.

Last time we met

The Wood haven’t faced Weston Super Mare since our 4-1 win in North Somerset back in February of 2015. It was a dominant away display from Boreham Wood, with a first half strike from Lee Angol, followed by 3 second half goals from Ricky Shakes, Daryl McMahon and Charlie Walker. Current Aston Villa forward, Ollie Watkins clawed one back for the Seagulls in the 92nd minute of the game.

One to watch

Luke Coulson has been one of the Seagulls’ top performers so far this season. The 30-year-old has had a flying start to the 24/25 season, scoring 6 goals in 10 appearances, making him the league’s top goalscorer. He joined the Seagulls from fellow National League South side Dartford in the summer, where he scored 17 goals across 2 seasons at the club. The winger is on track to break his current goalscoring record of 10 goals in a season and it will be crucial for the Wood backline to keep him quiet during tomorrow afternoon’s clash between the two sides.

The Wood

The Wood have won 5 in 5 since the return of head coach, Luke Garrard. His second stint as in the dugout began with a 1-0 win away at Eastbourne Borough in the FA Cup, followed by a dominant 6-0 thrashing of Welling United at Meadow Park.

FA Cup action was up next against Larkhall Athletic, where goals from Junior Dixon and Kwesi Appiah got us over the line to win 2-1. We then made the trip to Wiltshire to face Chippenham Town, where Appiah got on the scoresheet again as we won 1-0. Finally, in Fourth Round Qualifying of the FA Cup, we hosted Carshalton Athletic and came away with a comfortable 4-0 victory, sealing our place in the First Round Proper.
