MATCH PREVIEW – WEALDSTONE (H)

11 January 2022

Boreham Wood v Wealdstone
Tuesday 4th January 2022, 7.45pm KO
LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

THE CONTEXT

This evening, Wood return to league action after a successful FA Cup weekend with a rearranged fixture against Wealdstone which fell foul over COVID-19 over the festive period.

The Stones haven’t played since the middle of December, and have lost their last four games in a row, coming into this fixture looking to increase the advantage they hold over the bottom three.

Wood have dropped to sixth after playing just one league game in December with postponements and cup competitions limiting our League play, but will be keen to build on their historic FA Cup win and continue challenging those at the top of the National League

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
JEROME OKIMO

Jerome Okimo began his career with Chalfont St. Peter where he made 308 appearances, before joining Wealdstone after a brief loan spell at Wingate & Finchley. He played an instrumental role in their promotion to the Conference South in 2014 before spells with Stevenage and Braintree Town, followed by a return to Wealdstone at the end of the 2016/17 season. He captained the club in their title-winning campaign of 2019/20 and was named in the National League South Team of the Year, before starting and captaining the side in every game in the subsequent campaign in the National League.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
CHARLIE COOPER

A Birmingham City youth product, Charlie Cooper departed the Blues after ten years without making a senior appearance, following loan spells with Forest Green Rovers, York City and a temporary return to the former. He would sign for Forest Green on a permanent basis in 2017 and made 25 appearances over two seasons, playing in the Football League having helped them achieve promotion during his loan spell under the management of his father, Mark. Further loan spells with Newport County and Boreham Wood preceded stints with FC Halifax Town and Woking before he joined Wealdstone in the summer.

“THE FINISHER”
JOSH UMERAH

A Charlton Athletic academy graduate, Josh Umerah helped the under-18 side win the Development League 2 in 2014/15 after finishing the season as top scorer, earning a call-up to the first team. He gained valuable experience out on loan with Kilmarnock, Wycombe Wanderers and Boreham Wood, before he left the Addicks to join Ebbsfleet United on a permanent basis in 2019. He spent a single season at Stonebridge Road before he was on the move again, this time joining up with Gary Johnson at Torquay United prior to a switch to Wealdstone this summer.

LAST TIME WE MET

Boreham Wood 3 – 1 Wealdstone
Saturday 10th April 2021
Vanarama National League
LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park

In a dominant affair against their local rivals, it took Boreham Wood until the 72nd minute to take the lead against Wealdstone when Jamal Fyfield headed home from a free kick. The visitors took just ten minutes to equalize though, when now-Wood duo Dennon Lewis and Jacob Mendy Mendy linking up with the latter slotting home, setting up an exciting end to the game. Tshimanga restored his side’s lead just two minutes later and secured his brace in stoppage time, shortly after Wealdstone went down to ten when Craig Fasanmade saw red for an elbow on Tom Champion. Luckily, Tshimanga’s late double was enough to secure the win, ending a run of eleven games without victory.
