Team News

Luke Garrard has no fresh injury concerns to deal with.

Danny Woodards missed the win over Leyton Orient, but remain hopeful of playing a part on Saturday. Otherwise, the Wood came away unscathed from the win over Orient.

Form Guide

Last time out, the Wood defeated National League leaders Leyton Orient 1-0 at Meadow Park.

The impressive victory was a positive reaction, from their 1-0 loss to Dover Athletic in the league prior.

A first league goal this season for Femi Ilesanmi opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute.

The Wood continued to dominate in the first half, but failed to add to their tally. They then showed a defensive resilience to stave off the high-flying Orient, in the closing stages.

Sorba Thomas and Bradley Ash came back into the side for the game against Orient and impressed. Ash actually scored against Torquay United, while on loan for Weston-super-Mare.

It continued the Wood’s good home form this campaign, where they have lost just twice in 90 minutes – against Harrogate Town and Dover Athletic.

The Wood currently sit 11th in the National League table, on 31-points, having played a game less than some of their rivals.

Managed by 63-year-old Gary Johnson, Torquay United currently top the National League South, with 39-points.

The Gulls have lost just once since Johnson took over, winning 12 of his 16 games in charge of the side.

They have won all five of their last matches, defeating Basingstoke Town on penalties in the last round of the FA Trophy.

One to Watch – Jamie Reid

The former Exeter City frontman was one of the players retained from Torquay United’s National League relegation last season.

He has shown exactly why so far this season, leading their rise up the National League table, under Gary Johnson.

Reid is currently joint first in the division’s goal scoring charts, with 13 goals to his name so far.

A feared forward, he has retained a great partnership in the forward areas with Ruairi Keating, from last season.

The 24-year-old adds pace and trickery to the Gulls attack and stopping him, will be key to stopping Torquay on Saturday.

From the Dugout – Luke Garrard

“They are a side who are top of the table in the National League South and they have got personnel in their ranks who were playing in the National League last year.

“I have got to look at Gary Johnson in terms of what his background is, he has been magnificent in football management. The experience that he has, as a manager at National League South level, is incredible.

“I was fortunate to go and watch them against Dartford and I saw a team who were well organised, well drilled, looked fit and had a purpose to their play. I am under no illusions on Saturday, that it is going to be tough.

“I have done my homework on them, I have not cheated or cut corners, and I am not, in any way, shape or form, going to take my feet off the gas, because they are in the National League South.

“I want a run in the trophy, and I want to go to Wembley – that’s a simple fact. I have set the tone from the off this week, that I don’t want an upset here. They come here as a big, big side.

“Torquay are a massive club, they are a huge, huge club. You look at their following at Welling recently, 1,600-1,800 fans there.

“Come Saturday, we know that if we play to our level, and if Torquay play to their level, then it is going to be a very open, attractive game of football.”
