Match preview: Enfield Town (A)

25 December 2024

The Wood are back in action on Boxing Day action as Luke Garrard’s men make the short journey to Enfield Town, with kick-off at 15:00.

Last season for the Towners

It’s safe to say that it was a historical 2023/24 campaign for the North London side. The Towners finished third in the Isthmian League Premier Division, going on to beat Wingate & Finchley 1–0 in the play-off semi-finals before defeating Chatham Town 3–0 in the final to earn promotion to the Vanarama National League South.

Form guide

Enfield Town currently sit 17th in the form guide after picking up one win, playing out two draws and suffering two losses over the course of their previous six league outings. At the back end of November, the Towners made the trip around the M25 to face Marc White’s Dorking Wanderers, coming away from Meadowbank with a point.

Two losses would follow for Gavin Macpherson’s side, suffering a 1-2 loss at home to Hornchurch and a 4-1 loss away to Torquay. At the beginning of the month, the Towners’ bad patch of form would be mirrored in the Isuzu FA Trophy as they were knocked out after a 4-2 defeat away to Sittingbourne of the Isthmian South East.

However, they would respond to their cup exit with a 3-1 win away to Tonbridge Angels in the league. A trip to Weston-super-Mare came next for Gavin Macpherson’s men, seeing them make the trip back to North London with a point. Finally, in their previous outing, tomorrow afternoon’s hosts held Worthing to a goalless draw in West Sussex.

Last time we met

We cruised to a commanding 4-1 win in our last meeting with Enfield Town, coming in a 2021/22 pre-season friendly at the Queen Elizabeth II stadium. Kabongo Tshimanga, Connor Smith, Gus Mafuta, and Jamal Fyfield netted for the Wood with Luke Garrard’s side dominant throughout. Enfield briefly equalised from 12 yards but struggled to contain our relentless attack.

One to watch

Hugely popular in midfield for the Towners, Sam Youngs was voted Manager’s Player for last season after notching 31 goals and 11 assists in 52 games. The 33-year-old is top scorer so far this campaign for Gavin Macpherson’s men, having found the back of the net five times. Youngs will no doubt be looking to add to his tally tomorrow afternoon and has likely been a key consideration in Luke Garrard’s preparations.

The Wood

Luke Garrard’s men have been in a very strong run of form in recently, winning five of our previous six games in all competitions, drawing once. Back-to-back away wins followed our 0-0 draw at home to Torquay United, starting with a Kwesi Appiah brace that securing all three points in a 2-1 win at Bath City.

Then, after finding ourselves two goals down after 45 minutes at Chelmsford City, we came back to secure victory with goals from Jayden Richardson and Lee Ndlovu. Kwesi Appiah would then get himself on the scoresheet in our three games that followed, starting the decisive goal in our 1-0 victory at home to Eastbourne Borough in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

A hattrick in our 3-0 derby win over St Albans and a brace against Chesham would then follow for the striker. In our previous outing, coming on Saturday, it wouldn’t be the result we would have wished for as we were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Tonbridge Angels, Lee Ndlovu equalising five minutes after the visitors had gone ahead in the tie.
