MATCH PREVIEW: BOREHAM WOOD VS WEALDSTONE

7 November 2014

The wait is nearly over for the mouthwatering visit of our local rivals Wealdstone. Separated by a Division, this will be the first competitive game between the two sides since 2010.

Given the Ruislip based sides massive fan base a large crowd is expected which will create a superb atmosphere akin to our recent tie with St Albans City, a game that stands out as one of the events of the season so far at Meadow Park.

Wealdstone have mirrored our first season at this level five seasons ago, finding points hard to come by, but have improved of late under the expert tutelage of old campaigner Gordon Bartlett who is now in his twentieth year at the helm!

They have picked up a win and two draws from their last four League outings to climb off the foot of the table and will be looking to continue the momentum at one of their happy hunting grounds of the past.

Our last six meetings in the Ryman League Premier Division resulted in just one win for Wood, with The Stones always set up as a very hard team to beat.

In their ranks are ex Wood players Elliott Godfrey and Matt Ball, with Bartlett making full use of his connections regularly bringing in astute loan signings from the areas higher placed clubs.

One such recent signing sees 20 year old Connor Calcutt, who played against us last season for Berkhamsted arrive from Stevenage to partner a man twice his age up front! That man is Scott McGleish who I can fondly remember tearing teams apart down at Underhill many moons ago on my rare visits!

Ian Allinson will have a full squad to choose from, including the as yet unused defender Ryan Johnson who is currently on loan from Stevenage and will therefore know Calcutt well.

According to The Gaffer, “ This will be every bit as hard as our previous encounters with Wealdstone, make no mistake. Their form on the road has been superb. They have picked up two wins and come away from Gosport Borough and Ebbsfleet with two 0-0 draws. We will need to be at our very best and bearing in mind we have two tough games coming up in three days I will be looking to use the squad wisely.”

Lee Angol will be looking to stay in touch at the top of the scorers board, adding to his nine League goals so far this season. The whole squad will be chomping at the bit after their “ Salisbury Day” last weekend, keen to protect their second spot in the table.

The atmosphere promises to be highly charged so why not get down to Meadow Park to be a part of it!
