Boreham Wood v Barnet
Tuesday 20th April 2021, 7.45pm
Meadow Park, Vanarama National League
THE CONTEXT
The Wood are back at Meadow Park this evening and face local rivals Barnet FC in the final local Derby of the 2020/21 season.
The Bee’s last fixture was just three days ago against Aldershot town where they took all three points for the first time since February 16th.
Boreham Wood, travelled to Huish Park on Saturday to face Yeovil Town who forced the Woods first loss in 11 games with a 1-0 defeat.
THE FORM GUIDE
THE WOOD
Previous six games (in all competitions): –
Yeovil Town (A) | VNL | 1-0 L
Chesterfield (A) | VNL | 0-0 D
Wealdstone (H) | VNL | 3-1 W
Hartlepool United (H) | VNL | 2-2 D
Sutton United (H) | VNL | 0-0 D
Aldershot Town (A) | VNL | 3-3 D
On Saturday Wood faced Yeovil Town who forced their first loss in 11 games. The Wood had been struggling to convert their draws into wins, however, they seemed to break that spell after the 3-1 victory over local rivals Wealdstone. Facing two tough teams on the road last week was just too much after picking up just one point from the two games.
Kabongo Tshimanga is currently sitting in joint third with Rooney on the league’s top goal scorers, which he can only hope he adds to in this evening’s game.
THE BEES
Previous six games (in all competitions): –
Aldershot (H) | VNL | 3-1 W
Maidenhead United (A) | VNL | 0-0 D
Weadlstone (A) | VNL | 5-1 L
Solihull Moors (H) | VNL | 0-2 L
Yeovil Town (A) | VNL | 3-1 L
Chesterfield (H) | VNL | 0-2 L
The Bee’s currently sit in 22nd place just above Dover Athletic, who’s results this season have been null and void, so in essence the Bees sit bottom of the table. The Bees have struggled this season to take away all three points and have had three different managers so far.
However, with no relegation this season it is a good time for Barnet to steady their ship and find a good rhythm in the squad to start next season strong.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
“THE DESTROYER”
BEN NUGENT
No nonsense centre-half, Ben Nugent was Barnet’s first signing of the summer.
27-year-old Nugent has Football League pedigree having played his trade with: Cardiff City, Brentford, Peterborough United, Gillingham and Stevenage Town.
After starting his career in non-league football, Nugent secured a move to Welsh giants, Cardiff City and was part of the Bluebirds side that was promoted to the Premier League in the 2012/13 season.
Following his experience in the Football League, Nugent is now looking to make a home for himself with Barnet.
“THE PLAYMAKER”
ANTHONY WORDSWORTH
The 31-year-old central midfielder has vast amounts of experience in the Football League at both League One and Championship level.
Wordsworth has made over 380 appearances scoring 67 goals in all competitions.
Wordsworth started his career in Essex with Colchester United where he enjoyed a six-year spell.
Since then, he’s played for Ipswich Town, Rotherham Town, Crawley Town, Southend United, AFC Wimbledon and is now with Barnet.
“THE FINISHER”
JJ HOOPER
The strong forward joined the Bees this summer. He started his career in the academy of Newcastle United, but he first made his name with Havant and Waterlooville where he scored 20 goals in all competitions as he fired the Hawks to a play-off spot.
A move to the Football League then beckoned for Hooper as he switched to Port Vale.
Despite his Football League pedigree, the forward has no problem finding the net in the National League having scored 14 goals in 22 appearances for Bromley before moving onto Wrexham.
LAST TIME WE MET
Barnet 0-3 Boreham Wood
Friday 1st January 2021
The Hive, Vanarama National League
Although the home side showed a lot of promise early on, it was Tshimanga who had the first chance to score after twelve minutes when his effort was well saved by Scott Loach following a fantastic defence-splitting pass from Murtagh. Six minutes later it was the former Oxford City forward who gave Wood the lead when he ran onto an excellent flick on by Matt Rhead, this time finishing well beyond former England Under 21 keeper Loach with what was perhaps a harder chance than the one denied earlier.
On the half hour mark, a Matt Rhead header was destined for the corner of the net when Myles Judd dived impressively to prevent a second goal. However, after consultation with the linesman, the referee awarded Boreham Wood a penalty for the obvious handball and sent Judd off in the process. Tshimanga then made no mistake from the spot doubling Boreham Wood’s advantage. Being a man up and 2-0 to the good, it was obvious at this stage that there was small chance of a come back for the home side.
After forty two minutes, Boreham Wood got their deserved third goal when Tom Champion struck a superb volley past Scott Loach for his first of the season. Wood went into half time three goals up along with multiple chances that could’ve added to the scoreline.
