Meadow Park, Vanarama National League
THE CONTEXT
On Saturday, Wood face 16th place Altrincham in the Vanarama National League at Meadow Park.
In their recent fixture, the Robins beat Chesterfield 3-2 at home, thanks to an 89th minute winner from Midfielder Josh Hancock.
The Wood were on the road again and picked up a valuable point against a strong Bromley side with a 1-1 draw at Hayes Lane.
Unfortunately, this fixture will be held behind closed doors. However, there are several ways for fans to stay up-to-date on proceedings including Wood’s Twitter and Instagram, as well as purchasing your BWFCtv match pass for just £9.99.
THE FORM GUIDE
THE WOOD
Previous six games (in all competitions and friendlies): –
Bromley (A) | VNL | 1-1 D
Torquay United (A) | VNL | 1-1 D
Dagenham & Redbridge (H) | VNL |0-1 L
Southend United (H) | FAC1R | 3-3 (4-3 after penalty shootout) W
Woking (H) | VNL | 1-0 W
Wimborne Town (H) | FAC4QR | 2-0 W
Wood made the short trip across London on Tuesday night where we matched up against a physical Bromley side and left with a hard-earned point from a very defensive performance in a 1-1 draw.
Just six minutes into the game, Sorba Thomas popped up with a goal of the season contender as he cut inside from the left flank and found the top corner from range.
However, the pressure from the home side was relentless and eventually, the Ravens were rewarded for their efforts when Michael Cheek found himself on the end of an inviting cross to equalise on the brink of half-time.
Wood defended well to keep the score level and Luke Garrard will be happy with two draws in two successive games against teams that will be up there come to the end of the season.
THE ROBINS
Previous six games (in all competitions and friendlies): –
Chesterfield (H) | VNL | 3-2 W
Aldershot Town (H) | VNL | 1-2 L
Solihull Moors (H) | VNL | 0-2 L
Wealdstone (A) | VNL | 1-0 L
Dover Athletic (A) | VNL | 0-1 W
Hartlepool (A) | VNL | 1-1 D
After promotion last season from the National League North, Altrincham have started the 2020/21 campaign with two wins from their nine league games.
Prior to Saturday’s home win against Chesterfield, the Robins had lost three on the bounce and have struggled in front of the goal, scoring just once which was a consolation against Aldershot Town.
A win for the Manchester club on Saturday will see them leapfrog the Wood in the league table, albeit having played one more game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
“THE DESTROYER”
CONNOR HAMPSON
Hampson started his footballing career at Mossley where he made his first team debut at the age of 16 years old. The left-back then went on to join Curzon Ashton where he spent an enjoyable six years of his career.
Hampson then signed for Stockport County in 2017 before joining the Robins on loan shortly after.
The loan deal was then made permanent and Hampson has gone on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Robins since joining the club.
“THE PLAYMAKER”
JOSH HANCOCK
Hancock started his career in Nantwich’s youth system before joining the first team at Winsford United, he then went onto sign for Witton Albion before signing for AFC Telford in 2014.
In 2015 Hancock re-signed for Witton prior to a move to Salford City at the start of the 2016/17 campaign. Hancock followed manager Phil Parkinson to the Robins and has featured 146 times for his club since.
Hancock has made himself a real fans favourite since joining the Robins as he has scored an impressive 54 goals in 126 league appearances since signing.
Wood will have to watch out for Hancock come Saturday as he is the man on form, scoring two of the three goals in the Robins recent home win against Chesterfield, including the 89th minute winner.
“THE FINISHER
FISAYO ADARABIOYO
Adarabioyo spent time in the youth academy’s at Manchester City, Birmingham City, St Johnstone and Crystal palace before signing for Macclesfield Town in 2015.
After making just three first team appearances for Macclesfield, the centre forward then signed for National League North side AFC Fylde.
Things did not quite work out for Adarabiyo in England, so opted for a move abroad where he signed for Dutch First Division side NAC Breda in 2016.
A move back to England was then on the cards for the 25-year-old when he signed for Northern Premier side Warrington Town earlier this year and made just three appearances before signing for Curzon Athletic.
After appearing just once for Curzon, Altrincham added the Forward to their squad at the start of the 2020/21 National League Campaign.
