Boreham Wood v Aldershot Town
Tuesday 16th August 2022, 7.45pm
LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, National League
THE CONTEXT
Football under the lights returns to the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park as the Wood host Aldershot Town on Tuesday night.
The Shots currently prop up the National League table after losing both of their opening games of the season, and will be keen to pick up their first points sooner rather than later.
Wood will be looking to make it three unbeaten at the start of the season, following their last gasp draw at home to Notts County on the weekend.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
“THE DESTROYER”
JOE PARTINGTON
Aldershot Town skipper Joe Partington progressed through the ranks at AFC Bournemouth after joining the Cherries from Portsmouth, and enjoyed spells out on loan at Eastbourne Borough, Aldershot, and Eastleigh. He would make the move to the latter permanent and captained the club during 2016/17 after winning all four of the 2015/16 end of season awards, returning to the Spitfires for a second spell following a season at Bristol Rovers. He later joined Bromley for the 2021/22 season and featured in the FA Trophy Final win against Wrexham, before returning to Aldershot on a permanent basis in June 2022.
“THE PLAYMAKER”
JOSH MCQUOID
A product of the AFC Bournemouth academy, Josh McQuoid joined the Cherries from Southampton and went on to play over 100 times for the club over two spells, sandwiching stints at Millwall and Burnley. Opportunities proved more difficult to come by in his second spell and joined Peterborough United and Coventry City on loan, departing Dean Court for a second time to join Luton Town in 2015. He would once again find himself out on loan, eventually dropping into non-league permanently after stints at Stevenage and Torquay United with spell at Aldershot Town either side of a season at Weymouth.
“THE FINISHER”
INIH EFFIONG
After beginning his career at St Albans City, Inih Effiong joined Northwood before twice bouncing between the Saints and Boreham Wood. Loans with Hitchin Town and Chesham United saw him join the latter permanently prior to stints at Hayes & Yeading United, Dunstable Town, Burnham, Arlesey Town, Biggleswade Town and Hertford Town, attracting interest from clubs higher up in the pyramid. Spells with Barrow, Woking and Ross County preceded two prolific seasons with Dover Athletic, later joining Barnet and Notts County on loan from Stevenage. After returning to Woking in 2021/22, Effiong’s 13-goal haul saw him depart for Aldershot Town.
LAST TIME WE MET
Aldershot Town 2-1 Boreham Wood
Saturday 9th April 2022
EBB Stadium, National League
A lacklustre Boreham Wood side fell to a narrow defeat against Aldershot Town to leave Hampshire empty handed.
The hosts produced the first opening of the match after just three minutes when Mikael Ndjobi shot into the side netting, setting up a dominant period early on for Aldershot with Lewis Kinsella, Jayden Harris and Tommy Willard also going close. Ryan Hall would need to be alert to deny Tyrone Marsh with an excellent save at the other end, before the Shots keeper got involved in a deserved opener for the hosts when Ndjobi brilliantly controlled his goal kick, before finishing past Taye Ashby-Hammond on 23 minutes. The Wood did begin to control possession towards the end of the half, but found chances hard to come by as Aldershot remained stubborn and difficult to break down.
A quiet second half saw the visitors once again unable to find a way past a determined Shots defence, but this all changed when Danilo Orsi took advantage of a lapse in concentration at the back after a James Comley throw-in caused confusion, with the Wood loanee levelling the score on the hour-mark. Hall would once again be called into action as the visitors looked to take a grasp on proceedings and take a lead, with the young goalkeeper once again denying Marsh with a good stop. A lead would soon be taken though but unfortunately not in favour of the visitors, as Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong restored the Shots’ advantage with what proved to be the winning goal when he finished well after catching the Wood defence napping, with the hosts putting their bodies on the line to succumb their opponents to a seventh game without a win.
