Boreham Wood Football club would like to announce that following a phone call from Ebbsfleet United Vice Chairman Peter Varney to our Chairman Danny Hunter, that permission has been given for Ebbsfleet to speak to Boreham Wood FC player Daryl McMahon.
Chairman Danny Hunter said “Sometimes in life things happen that nobody in my position particularly wants or can in anyway foresee. Peter Varney rang me out of the blue, asked for permission to speak to Daryl regarding the interim managers job at his club”..
“After sixteen seasons as Chairman, does that mean in all probability that conversations between the parties had already taken place, we’ll never know that? However a grown up stance had to be taken, especially as we have a rather important game at Chelmsford this Saturday, where we are hoping to finish in second and enter the play off’s with home advantage”..
Hunter continued “Having listened to Peter, I then had a long chat with my gaffer Ian Allinson and his assistant Luke Garrard. I followed that up by having supper with Daryl to discuss things sensibly over a rather good chinese meal. Obviously as players do, Daryl left me with the bill but in all seriousness, I kept gaffer Ian Allinson informed, as he was at our reserve game in Tring, running the rule over some of his first team squad, who were getting some match time ahead of the play offs”..
“The upshot is Daryl has been allowed to sign off his contract with immediate effect and talk to Ebbsfleet. Is it an ideal situation for us this close to the play off’s, what do you think?? But it is an amazing opportunity for somebody of Daryls age and he wanted to talk to them. With him already running their Academy, it could in truth be a great fit for Ebbsfleet”..
“As I gave Daryl his first senior coaching job three years ago and Ian Allinson gave him his first assistant managers job, We’re also both proud of our part in his progress to date and what he’s now achieving as a coach. He can hopefully go on to achieve great things as a manager but as we know management can be and is notoriously difficult”..
Hunter went on “Ian Allinson obviously had the ultimate power to veto any move if he so chose but he assures me that his play off plans are not affected unduly and that he genuinely wishes Daryl well”..
Hunter concluded “Ian was very honest with me.. He has made it clear, he’s looking to play a certain way in the play offs. That was the reason that Daryl hadn’t started in our last two league games, where we beat Sutton 2-0 and then drew 1-1 at Ebbsfleet”..
Ian Allinson said, ” We have players like Graeme Montgomery, Ricky Shakes and Matty Whichelow, who have carried us all season to second place and they have scored nearly forty goals between the three of them. When you add in Lee Angol’s 30 league and cup goals, then factor in Junior Morias contribution since October, it a formidable attacking line up”.. So we wish Macca well but that’s now gone, we must move on, we must look forward and we must trust our squad, as it is fit and will be firing”..
