GOODBYE GEOFF

GEOFF WICKENS

Boreham Wood Football Club are saddened to have learnt of the passing of one of our longest serving supporters Geoff Wickens.

Geoff has in truth had a long and brave battle with cancer in recent years and unfortunately after some initial success, the illness recently returned and his body just could not fight the disease any longer.

Chairman Danny Hunter said “Geoff has been coming to Meadow Park since way back in the early 70’s when my father was manager here. Throughout my time as Chairman he’s always been so supportive, he’s probably written to me with his opinions and thoughts once or twice a year over the last 17 seasons.”

Hunter continued “Geoff and his family actually moved away from Borehamwood and settled in and around Reading many years ago, but distance was not a problem to him and he was as determined as ever to follow his beloved ‘Wood’ both home and away… Throughout my Chairmanship I’d often see him sitting quietly towards the back of the stand at most of our home and away games and we would always acknowledge each other”..

“That’s how non-league football is and that’s what makes it so special. I’m sure Geoff and I agree, it’s the closeness and camaraderie of all concerned at our level, that bonds us all and we wouldn’t want it any other way…”

“In recent months when Geoff’s illness had got worse, he contacted me as he wanted to pay for a new electronic scoreboard to be put in the ground and he wanted it situated above the club shop. With the help of our media man Grant Morris, Geoff ordered the scoreboard he had carefully chosen and as such Geoff will now leave it as his legacy to his club and to the supporters”..

“The scoreboard will be installed and ready for our first league game of the season against Forest Green Rovers on August 6th as Geoff wanted and it’s a fitting reminder of the man and the love he had for his club”..

Hunter concluded “Geoff was a supporter, who became an old friend over the years to so many people like myself. He was a gentle soul with a strong opinion about his club but throughout my tenure has always been so respectful.. I will of course liaise with his family and his partner Jane regarding the funeral arrangements and hopefully when it’s appropriate, we can arrange for an official opening of the Geoff Wickens scoreboard, with his family in attendance”..

FAREWELL OLD FRIEND
