A below-par Boreham Wood were beaten 2-1 in Cornwall against Truro City with second-half goals from Luke Jephcott and Jaze Kabia. A late consolation from Chris Bush for Boreham Wood gave them hope, but they weren’t able to repeat the late heroics from Torquay United on Saturday.
Luke Garrard named an unchanged line-up from Saturday’s dramatic draw against Torquay United.
The game started off in a lively fashion when there was a mix-up in the Wood defence between Nathan Ashmore and Charlie O’Connell early on, which nearly enabled Dominic Johnson-Fisher to nip in. Soon afterwards, Matt Rush had a good chance for Boreham Wood but fired straight at Tinners keeper Dan Lavercombe. On nine minutes, Connor Riley-Lowe forced Ashmore into a fantastic save from a well-struck volley.
The next period of the game was dominated by the hosts, and the long throws of Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain were a concern to the Wood defence. Wood got better as the half wore on, and on 26 minutes, Mo Sagaf shot from distance straight into the arms of Lavercombe. On 41 minutes, an inch-perfect Josh Hare cross was headed wide by Femi Ilesanmi. Two minutes later, Matt Rush missed a gilt-edged chance by shooting narrowly wide from close range.
HT: Truro City 0-0 Boreham Wood
The second period started with the hosts in the ascendancy, and Tyler Harvey and Riley-Lowe both went close a few minutes after the restart, with Ashmore coming to Boreham Wood’s rescue both times. Riley-Lowe also hit the side netting during this period. On 63 minutes, Josh Hare crossed the ball in for Appiah, who headed into the path of Rush, but he missed from close range. Wood were made to pay for that miss a minute later when Luke Jephcott scored with a really impressive finish into the corner of Ashmore’s goal.
Boreham Wood struggled to really offer anything in response. Johnson-Fisher, who gave the Wood defence problems all night, nearly added a second on 73 minutes but fired just wide. The Tinners doubled their lead on 84 minutes when a mix-up between Erico Sousa and Ashmore allowed Jaze Kabia to nip in, round the keeper, and slot the ball home. Two minutes later, Wood were back in with a chance when Chris Bush headed home to halve the deficit. Boreham Wood had a good chance to equalise on 90 minutes when some lovely wing play from Abdul Abdulmalik and a pinpoint cross was headed wide by Rush. Despite seven minutes added on, that was the last real chance Boreham Wood had to equalise.
FT: Truro City 2-1 Boreham Wood
It was a disappointing performance from Luke Garrard’s men, and unfortunately, Wood have only managed to muster a solitary point from their two away games in the Southwest over the last few days. They will want to get back to winning ways on Saturday against Aveley and keep their title hopes alive.
