A combination of first-team and academy players produced a comfortable win for Boreham Wood as they returned to Herts Senior Cup action for the first time in five seasons. Two goals each from Junior Dixon and Tyrone Marsh, as well as one from David Agbontohoma, were enough to secure victory against Southern League Central side Enfield in the second round.
Boreham Wood, managed on the night by Assistant Manager Mark Ricketts and First Team and Academy Coach Ross Wearne, made several changes for this tie. Three academy players started, including Morianne Busse in goal, Adam Morley at right-back, and Daniel Isaac in defence. They also had five more from the PASE scheme on the bench, with a host of first-team regulars in the stands cheering them on.
It didn’t start well for Boreham Wood as the hosts took the lead in the third minute when a lovely cross from Jack Taylor was nicely swept in by Joni Vikaj. Keiran Southgate nearly doubled their lead a minute later but was denied by Busse in the Wood goal. Enfield were made to pay for this miss a minute later when Junior Dixon equalised for Boreham Wood with a cool finish. On 10 minutes, Charles Clayden had a good chance to put Wood in front but was denied by George Edgeworth in the E’s goal. Shortly afterwards, Abdul Abdulmalik headed over from a corner when well placed.
Dixon got his second on 22 minutes, putting Boreham Wood in front with a lovely left-footed shot which curled into the corner of the goal. Four minutes later, Tyrone Marsh added a third with a deflected shot which found its way into the net. Wood continued to turn the screw, and Clayden struck the wall with a free kick on 40 minutes. Just before the break, Dixon had a good chance to complete his hat-trick, but his shot was well saved by Edgeworth.
HT: Enfield 1-3 Boreham Wood
The Wood continued their dominance in the second half, and six minutes after the restart, David Agbontohoma added a fourth with a well-placed header. On 58 minutes, Busse pulled off a good save to deny Dimi Christou before Southgate fired over after a nice turn. Tyrone Marsh added a fifth goal on 75 minutes with a well-struck shot from outside the area. Three minutes later, Marsh blotted his copybook by receiving a straight red card for violent conduct. Substitute James Kosky went close in the closing minutes but was denied by a good save from keeper Edgeworth.
FT: Enfield 1-5 Boreham Wood
It was a welcome win for Boreham Wood in a competition in which they have been successful in the past. It was a good workout for some of the first-team squad and some of the PASE scheme players, who gave a good account of themselves. Boreham Wood will travel to either Wormley Rovers or Kings Langley in the Quarter-Finals.
