BOREHAM WOOD VS GOSPORT BOROUGH – MATCH PREVIEW

10 September 2013

Boreham Wood v Gosport Borough

Match Preview , by John Mead.

It will be an historic day as the recently promoted Borough make their first ever trip to Meadow Park, with the two sides having never previously met.

The visitors have had their inaugural taste of life in The Skrill South with an all too familiar floundering start. The difference in quality between Step Three and Step Two has been the nemesis for many a side as we at The Wood can testify.

The Boro have drawn two and lost four of their opening exchanges and like ourselves are currently at the wrong end of the table. However no side has managed to put more than two goals past our visitors, whom up until recently were under a transfer embargo, which has now been lifted.

Their current manager Alex Pike has performed wonders since his inception in December 2005. Lifting the side out of The Wessex League, they famously gained promotion to the Southern League Premier in the 2011/2012 season through none other than Steve Claridge. His last minute equaliser against Poole Town took the game into extra time and Claridge did the business again scoring one of the two goals that sealed promotion.

The following season Borough excelled themselves winning promotion again. A tense play off final with favourites Hemel Hempstead went to the wire. After relinquishing a two goal lead the game went to penalties. The hero of the afternoon was Nathan Ashmore whose save led to a 5-4 victory in the sudden death decider.

The former Havant And Waterlooville shot stopper will feature on Saturday along with thirty four year old Andy Forbes who will be leading the line. Wood fans may have seen him in action at his previous clubs Eastleigh, Sutton United and Woking.

With Ben Nunn making good progress with his back injury he may well be available for the game as Wood look to stop the recent run of four successive defeats.

Boreham Wood v Gosport Borough, Meadow Park. Saturday September 14th kick off 3pm.
