Match Preview

Match preview: Aveley (H)

7 March 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men host relegation-threatened Aveley in the Vanarama National League South, kicking off at 15:00.

Last Season for the Millers

After back-to-back promotions to reach the sixth tier, the Millers secured a Vanarama National League South play-off spot with a seventh-place finish. Although their play-off campaign ended quickly with a loss at Maidstone United, Aveley fans could be proud of their first season at this level.

Form Guide

Aveley have struggled in recent weeks, placing them 20th in the form guide, with one win, one draw, and four losses in their last six games. With only two wins since the turn of the year, the Millers sit bottom of the Vanarama National League South, nine points from safety.

In their previous match, Aveley suffered last-minute heartbreak at Parkside, settling for a 2-2 home draw against Salisbury City. Despite trailing at half-time, they went ahead in the final minutes through goals from Luke Holness and David Hicks. It looked like the hosts would hold on for the win, but Josh Summerton equalised for Salisbury in the ninth minute of injury time, ensuring the points were shared.

Last Time We Met

The Wood fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against relegation-battling Aveley despite creating several chances. They started brightly, with Ndlovu winning an early free kick and Clayden threatening in attack. Appiah’s header and Marsh’s long-range effort were both saved.

Aveley broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when David Kawa found space in the box and calmly slotted past Ashmore. The Wood pushed for an equaliser, with O’Connell and Sagaf testing Bloedorn, while Ashmore made crucial saves. A frantic stoppage-time scramble saw Ndlovu and Appiah go close, but The Wood couldn’t find a breakthrough, slipping to a frustrating defeat.

One to Watch

Although the Millers have struggled recently, centre-back Brooklyn Kabongolo has impressed since joining in October 2024. As well as being a rock at the back, he has contributed offensively with three goals and two assists in 24 league games.

The Wood

Luke Garrard’s men will be looking to get back to winning ways tomorrow after going winless in our previous last two outings. Following a difficult period from late January into February, The Wood bounced back with three consecutive wins against Eastbourne Borough, St Albans City, and Chelmsford City. However, after picking up just one point from our last two games, we have slipped back to fifth in the Vanarama National League South.

An incredible comeback to earn a point at Torquay United preceded our most recent match, a 2-1 defeat in our longest trip of the season to Truro City. A goalless first half was followed by The Wood falling two goals behind by the 84th minute. Although Chris Bush sparked hopes of another late comeback, the Tinners held firm, leaving The Wood to return to Hertfordshire empty-handed.
