Match preview: Chelmsford City (A)

1 December 2024

It’s a quick turnaround for the Wood as we face Chelmsford City tomorrow evening at the Melbourne Community Stadium, with kick-off at 19:45.

Last season for the Clarets

Robbie Simpson’s side had a very impressive 2023/24 campaign, finishing in second place, eventually reaching the semi-finals of the Vanarama National League South play-offs. They took the eventual play-off winners Braintree Town to extra time at the after being 2-0 down. However, the Clarets bowed out in the end, losing 3-2 after extra time.

Form guide

The Clarets have three wins in their last five matches in all competitions. This began with a win on penalties away to West Essex FC in the Essex Senior Cup. Three days later, they exited the Isuzu FA Trophy in the second round after a 2-0 loss to Peterborough Sports.

The following week, the Clarets travelled to Worthing, where they took the lead in the 34th minute, but after going down to 10 men in the second half, eventually conceded, causing the points to be shared.

Returning to the Essex Senior Cup, Robbie Simpson’s side travelled to their local rivals Billericay Town, where they progressed to the next round in a 3-2 victory. Finally, Chelmsford got back to winning ways in the league yesterday in a 3-1 win at home to Slough Town.

Last time we met

We last faced the Clarets in the league in April 2015, holding a 3-1 lead early into the second half, but Chelmsford clawed it back to 3-3 by the 75th minute. However, Graeme Montgomery found the eventual winner 6 minutes later to seal all three points.

One to watch

Ipswich Town Loanee, Osman Foyo has been a huge threat for the Clarets in attack since joining the club. The 20-year-old has eight goals this season, making him one to keep an eye on tomorrow evening.

The Wood

Luke Garrard’s side now have won four wins in five in all competitions after yesterday’s 2-1 win away to Bath City. It finished goalless last weekend at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park as we drew 0-0 with Torquay United.

Prior to this, many of our PASE Academy players excelled in the Herts Senior Cup where we won 5-1 against Enfield to progress to the quarter final.

Before this, the Wood won on penalties against Felixstowe & Walton United to progress to the next round of the Isuzu FA Trophy. Finally, we hosted Truro City earlier this month where a Charles Clayden strike earnt us a 1-0 victory.
