The Wood return to Meadow Park to face Welling United, on the back of a 1-0 win at Eastbourne Borough to progress to the next round of the FA Cup. This is Luke Garrard’s first game at home since returning as head coach so we need all the fans in the stadium on the day to give him a warm welcome back!

A 1-0 loss to Chatham Town saw Welling exit the FA cup last weekend, however their last league game saw them overcome Torquay United with a 2-0 win, leaving them 14th in the league standings.

Rod Stringer’s side have only won 1 of their last 5 matches, their most recent outing being an FA Cup fixture.

The Wings travelled to East London to face Hornchurch, in a game where the sides couldn’t be split and it ended 0-0. Returning to Park View Road, Welling hosted Chesham which was a game to forget for the hosts. The Wings were 3-0 down going into stoppage time, accompanied by Martell Taylor-Crossdale receiving a red card. Daniel Martin clawed one back for Welling in the 98th minute, but it was only a consolation goal.

Things didn’t improve in Wellings next game, as a trip to Hertfordshire saw them lose 4-2 against Hemel Hempstead. The Wings fell behind in the 8th minute but managed to find the back of the net nine minutes after the break. A brace in 5 minutes from Ricky German put the Tudors ahead, then Connor Kurran-Browne made it 4-1 to the hosts. Gene Kennedy pulled one back for Welling, but it wasn’t enough as the visitors left empty handed.

The Wings got back to winning ways in their next match at home to Torquay United. It took Rod Stringer’s side until the 82nd minute to open the scoring as Charlie Pegrum. Gene Kennedy finished the game off in stoppage time, with the game ending 2-0.

Finally, a second qualifying round fixture in the FA Cup against Chatham Town was up next. Unfortunately, Welling could find a way back after Freddie Sears’ first half strike put Chatham through to the next round.

After being on loan at The Wings from Colchester for the second half last season, Kennedy was signed on a permanent basis this summer. The 21 year oldhas definitely impressed this season, being Welling’s top scorer in the league with 3 goals coming from the midfielder.
