MATCH REPORT: OLDHAM ATHLETIC (A)

13 February 2024

Oldham Athletic 2-1 Boreham Wood
Tuesday 13th February 2024, 7:45 pm
Boundary Park, Vanarama National League

It was a disappointing defeat in Greater Manchester for Luke Garrard’s men who were 1-0 up at the break due to a goal from Mo Sagaf before second half goals by Mike Fondop and Joe Garner gave the hosts victory.

Luke Garrard made one change from Saturday’s 1-0 win against Maidenhead United with Kwesi Appiah coming into the starting lineup, up front to replace Tyrone Marsh who drops to the bench.

Wood started positively and had the first chance of the match on seven minutes when an Erico Sousa cross was headed over by Kabs Tshimanga. A minute later the Latics Oliver Hammond headed wide of Nathan Ashmore’s goal following a pinpoint Mark Kitching cross. Kitching was provider again for the hosts on nineteen minutes when his free kick was headed narrowly wide by Liam Hogan. Four minutes later Sousa fired just over the bar. Wood started to put the pressure on the Latics defence and Mo Sagaf’s shot was well save by keeper Mark Hudson on twenty-five minutes.

On the half hour, Boreham Wood took the lead through Sagaf. An excellent counter attack started by Femi Ilesamni, who passed to Appiah who then played in Sagaf. His shot gave Hudson no chance in the Oldham goal as it nestled into the corner. Twelve minutes later Sousa went on an excellent run through the Latics defence, but he couldn’t keep his shot down. Just before the break Joe Garner went close for the hosts but his shot was blocked by Billy Sass-Davies.

HALF TIME: OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0-1 BOREHAM WOOD

Wood started the second half with good intent when an excellent turn and pass from Matt Robinson picked out Appiah whose shot was blocked. After this, the hosts were to dominate proceedings. It was as if there was a delayed reaction to a stern half time team talk by Latics manager Micky Mellon. They equalised on sixty-one minutes, when Davarn Green’s cross was turned in by Mike Fondop before Ashmore could even see it. David Agbontohoma went close on seventy minutes but was off target with his shot.

Sousa went close again six minutes later but was off target. Oldham got the winner on eighty-one minutes when Tom Conlon’s free kick was headed on by Charlie Raglan into the path of Joe Garner who nodded it past Ashmore. Three minutes later, the Latics nearly doubled their lead when an excellent run from Green created a chance for Hammond whose effort was well saved by Ashmore. The hosts were able to hold out comfortably for the points and Boreham Wood leave the North West empty handed.

Boreham Wood return to the North of England twice more in the next seven days and will want to revert back to winning ways at Hartlepool on Saturday.
