WELCOME, LIAM O’NEIL

11 August 2023

Boreham Wood is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Liam O’Neil, following his departure from League One side Cambridge United.

The 30-year-old midfielder began his career at West Bromwich Albion and signed his first professional contract in May 2012. He had two loan moves from there, one in 2012 with the Finnish club VPS, and another in 2014 with Scunthorpe United.

O’Neil has significant experience throughout the football league and has also made 3 appearances in the Premier League with West Brom during the 2013/14 season.

In 2015, the tidy midfielder joined Chesterfield in League One for an undisclosed fee. He spent two seasons with the Spireites, making 49 appearances and scoring on two occasions.

Cambridge United came calling in 2017, and Liam joined on a three-and-a-half-year deal. During his time at the Abbey Stadium, the midfielder made a total of 167 appearances and scored 7 goals in the process.

Upon his arrival at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium, Meadow Park, Manager Luke Garrard commented, “Liam is someone who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our dressing room, having played over 200+ games in the Football League and most recently in League One.”

“Having spoken to Liam over the last few weeks, he was someone we identified and wanted to join us on our journey. He will bring much-needed competition to the squad. He has an eye for a pass and an understanding of his role that will definitely complement our midfield unit. He goes straight into the matchday squad, and I look forward to seeing Liam progress at the Club.”

Liam will wear the number 17 shirt and is available for tomorrow’s game against FC Halifax Town, subject to National League and FA approval.

Welcome to the Wood, Liam!
