THE CONTEXT
The Wood return to the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park after a weekend off following the postponement of all fixtures in England, hosting Maidenhead United on Tuesday night.
The Magpies have had an indifferent start to the season following two victories in their opening three games with four winless games in a row, and will be keen to get back to winning ways.
Wood will be looking to notch their first home win of the season after continuing their 100% away record at Scunthorpe United last time out.

ALAN MASSEY
Magpies captain Alan Massey is a commanding centre back who has been at the heart of the Maidenhead defence since arriving with Alan Devonshire from Braintree Town in 2015. Having played for Wycombe Wanderers early on in his career, Massey left for Wealdstone with whom he stayed for six seasons, before joining Braintree Town in 2012 and linking up with Devonshire for the first time. Upon the latter’s departure to the Magpies in 2015, Massey would follow him to York Road and go on to make over 200 appearances, in which he lifted the National League South title in 2017.

KANE FERDINAND
Southend United academy product Kane Ferdinand went on to play 71 times for the Shrimpers after coming through the ranks at Roots Hall, but departed after the club were knocked out of the 2011/12 League Two play-offs at the semi-final stage. He would join Peterborough United and initially found himself as a regular fixture in the Posh midfield, but fell out of contention following their relegation from the Championship and spent time on loan at Northampton Town, Luton Town and Cheltenham Town, before leaving in 2015. A brief stint at Dagenham & Redbridge followed before a spell in non-league, with East Thurrock United giving him a chance to regain regular football. He impressed at Rookery Hill and joined Woking after just three months, experiencing relegation and an immediate promotion in 2017/18 and 2018/19 with his four-year spell eventually coming to an end with 162 appearances to his name. The Republic of Ireland youth international joined Maidenhead United following his release in 2021, and he has played 46 times for the club.

EMILE ACQUAH
Young striker Emile Acquah came through the ranks at Southend United and gained experience out on loan at Harlow Town, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances during 2018/19. He would break into the first team at Roots Hall and played three times in League One during the remainder of the season, going on to feature nearly 50 times after a personally successful 2020/21 campaign that saw him appear 33 times in all competitions. He was unable to help the Shrimpers avoid relegation though, and later re-joined Maidenhead United permanently after previously spending time on loan at York Road.

On a cold afternoon in front of the BT Sports cameras, the Wood fell to their first defeat in 17 outings at the hands of Maidenhead United.
It was the hosts who dominated for the most-part and enjoyed the better of things early on, with Dan Sparkes putting in a couple of teasing crosses that needed to be dealt with. The Wood grew into the game and produced chances for David Stephens, Josh Rees, James Comley and Tyrone Marsh that all went amiss, before Kane Smith crashed a curling effort off the crossbar. The Magpies began to threaten once more and made their opponents pay the price for their earlier misses, when Josh Kelly gave his side the lead when he gave Taye Ashby-Hammond no chance following a terrific run. This allowed the hosts to remain stubborn at the back with the Wood unable to break them down.
With the Wood looking for an equaliser, they played very much on the front foot at the start of the second half and once again enjoyed a spell of openings that they were unable to put away, with half substitute Dennon Lewis having an immediate impact as his mazy run created a chance for Jacob Mendy Mendy, before Connor Stevens and Adrian Clifton were unable to test Dan Gyollai in the Magpies goal. Maidenhead continued to remain strong and took advantage of another Wood miss when Danilo Orsi’s half volley was saved, with Nathan Blissett making sure of the points with less than ten minutes to go, diverting Ryan Upward’s volley past Ashby-Hammond to double the lead and end the Wood’s unbeaten run.
