PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
TOBY MULLARKEY

A Crewe Alexandra academy graduate, central defender Toby Mullarkey gained experience out on loan with Leek Town during a two-year scholarship before signing a one-year professional deal. He departed for Nantwich Town in 2017 and went on to play 88 times, scoring four goals from defence during his spell at the Weaver Stadium with his form attracting interest from teams in the Football League. Manager Phil Parkinson decided to go back to his former club to make Mullarkey his first signing as Altrincham manager and he has been a key part of the Robins’ rise to the National League.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
RYAN COLCLOUGH

Flying winger Ryan Colclough began his career in the Crewe Alexandra academy and progressed through the youth teams to sign a two-year scholarship, making his professional debut at the start of 2012/13. He went on to play 68 times for the Railwaymen scoring 13 times, but departed for Wigan Athletic in 2016. He went on loan to MK Dons during 2016/17 and scored his first career hat-trick during his time in Milton Keynes, being recalled by Wigan four months later. Two years at Scunthorpe United followed before his move to Altrincham in November 2020.

“THE FINISHER”
JORDAN HULME

Experienced striker Jordan Hulme is in his second spell at Moss Lane after returning to Altrincham on loan. After spells with Padiham and Ramsbottom United he joined Salford City but soon left for Altrincham, where he scored 31 goals in 54 appearances in his first season to be named Northern Premier League Player of the Season. He developed a reputation of being a skillful, energetic and aggressive forward, notching 70 goals in 139 appearances for Alty before joining AFC Fylde. With just seven appearances during 2020/21, he moved to Ashton United on loan before returning to Greater Manchester.

LAST TIME WE MET

Boreham Wood 2-0 Altrincham
Tuesday 15th February 2022
LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

The Wood bounced back from defeat to overcome Altrincham, as goals from Kane Smith and Scott Boden secured a 2-0 win.

It was Altrincham who dominated the opening stages with Matty Koslyo testing Taye Ashby-Hammond after just two minutes when he volleyed goalward following a corner, before two chances for Ryan Colclough in quick succession saw him denied by the Wood keeper as well. The Wood began to grow into it and began to test Tony Thompson in the Alty goal with a handful of half chances, before making the upturn in their performance count when Smith’s long-range effort took a wild deflection to beat an already committed Thompson and secure a fortuitous opener.

Neither side was able to find a way past their opposing keeper as Tyrone Marsh and A-Jay Letch-Smith went close, but the second began with an excellent chance for the hosts as Connor Stevens’ header almost beat Thompson, before Boden fired wide when well-placed. He would soon make amends though, sticking out a leg to convert Smith’s drilled cross just three minutes later. The visitors enjoyed a positive end to the game as they refused to give up without a fight, with Elliot Osborne and Jordan Hulme going close late on. It was the latter’s strike which beat Ashby-Hammond, demanding a last ditch clearance from Smith to keep the two goal cushion and secure all three points.
