Boreham Wood are delighted to announce the arrival of forward Danny Newton to the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park ahead of the 2022/23 National League season following his departure from Solihull Moors this summer.
Danny is a vastly experienced forward and has turned out for a multitude of clubs in Non-League, as well as a four-year spell in League Two with Stevenage, and will be able to use this experience to his advantage to help the Wood compete at the top end of the National League table.
Born in Liverpool, Newton began his career in the Leicester City after his family relocated to the area when he was just two-years-old, but he would go on to join Conference North side Hinckley United where he remained for three years, rising into the first team in 2010. Although opportunities proved limited in his first season, his second season saw him enjoy a breakthrough with 28 appearances that allowed him to form the third best attack in the division despite the Knitters finishing 15th. An even better season followed in 2011/12, with Newton creating a deadly partnership with future Premier League striker Andre Gray, with the duo notching a combined 29 goals.
He opted to move on at the end of the season in order to progress his career after Hinckley finished the campaign in the relegation zone, but a brief spell at Nuneaton Town proved to be short-lived and ended with a return to Hinckley on loan, as well as a loan spell at Barwell. He would make this move permanent, scoring 11 goals in 13 matches in the opening two months of the season, as well as being named as Man of the Match in three of those games, with his early season form attracting the interest of Conference North club Brackley Town. His time at St James Park saw him unable to nail down a regular place in the team though, and he was on the move again after just two months as he made the switch to league rivals Leamington, with his time with the Brakes being a far bigger success as he was named captain during his second season, departing with 30 goals in 60 appearances as well as three end-of-season awards, including being named the club’s Player of the Year.
He would later move to Tamworth where he continued his excellent form, with a further 39 goals in 79 appearances and five end-of-season awards including a second successive Player of the Year, seeing him invited to participate in Jamie Vardy’s V9 academy, a week-long camp intended to provide Non-League players with a platform to the Football League. He began to attract interest from a number of Football League clubs as a result and eventually signed for Stevenage, where he was top scorer in his first season with 16, that saw him win Player of the Season at Broadhall Way. However, his remaining three seasons at the LAMEX Stadium were less productive due to niggling injuries, with the forward leaving with 29 goals in 130 appearances in 2021. The 31-year-old did manage to bounce back though and played 38 times for Solihull Moors last season, helping them reach the play-off final.
Danny is a relentless, hard-working forward who has proven he can score goals at Non-League level, and will be a strong addition to the Wood’s frontline next season.
