MATCH PREVIEW – MAIDSTONE UNITED (H)

15 January 2022

Boreham Wood vs Maidstone United
Saturday 15th January 2022, KO 3.00pm
LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, Buildbase FA Trophy 4th Round

THE CONTEXT

This afternoon, Wood welcome National League South side Maidstone United to the LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, as they take a break from league action for the next round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

The Stones are enjoying a successful campaign so far, sitting level on points with league leaders Ebbsfleet United, but got through to the current round of the FA Trophy after Maidenhead United were forced to pull out of the competition due to several COVID-19 cases in their camp.

Wood moved back up to third after their narrow victory over Wealdstone on Tuesday night, and will be keen to continue their impressive run of form after beating rivals Barnet in the previous round.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
JOE ELLUL

Central defender Joe Ellul followed Hakan Hayrettin to the Gallagher Stadium having played under him at Braintree Town, joining Maidstone United in 2020. Having previously turned out for East Thurrock United, he joined Billericay Town ahead of the 2016/17 season and stayed for just a season, leaving for Braintree the following summer. He would go on to move to New Zealand where he played for Tasman United over a three-month spell. After returning to England with Maidenhead United, he signed for the Stones in the summer of 2020.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
SAM CORNE

Having begun his senior career with Welling United, Sam Corne spent four seasons at Park View and earned a call-up to the England C Team, with his performances also attracting interest from Football League clubs. He joined Braintree Town in 2017, where he linked up with Hakan Hayrettin for the first time before stints at Greenwich Borough and Ashworth United. It was with the latter that he scored 21 goals in 40 games, and he moved on to Maidstone United in the summer of 2019.

“THE FINISHER”
JACK BARHAM

Jack Barham began his career with Chelmsford City but made a name for himself in his breakout season while playing for Greenwich Borough, having previously played for Heybridge Swifts, Tilbury, Thurrock and Phoenix Sports. His prolific form saw him earn a move to Barnet but would move on loan to Bromley and Dorking Wanderers before signing for the latter on a permanent basis. He left Meadowbank in the summer of 2020 to sign for Dartford before joining.

LAST TIME WE MET

Boreham Wood 0-1 Maidstone United
Saturday 29th December 2018
LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

The Wood fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to strugglers Maidstone United, with Jake Cassidy’s early goal being enough to end a run of five straight league defeats. The hosts looked to fight back with Maidstone withstanding plenty of pressure, but Dan Wishart was sent off midway through the second half to give Boreham Wood a lifeline. They thought they were afforded a way back into the game when Justin Shaibu won a penalty, but Ross Worner was on hand to make amends for his foul and keep Kieran Murtagh’s spot-kick out, with the Stones seeing out a crucial victory.
