PLAYERS TO WATCH
“THE DESTROYER”
LAURENCE MAGUIRE
Brother of England international and Manchester United captain Harry, Laurence Maguire has pedigree in the same position.
The centre-back who can also operate in midfield came through the academy of Chesterfield and made his professional debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers u23’s in 2016.
Like his brother, Laurence Maguire is also an England international after he was called up to the England ‘C’ squad in October 2018.
“THE PLAYMAKER”
CURTIS WESTON
Curtis Weston is an experienced midfielder with plenty of experience in the EFL and National League.
The central midfield player started his career with Millwall where he became the youngest player to ever play in a FA Cup final aged just 17 years and 119 days. A stint with Swindon Town followed Weston’s spell with the Lions before a big move to Leeds United.
After failing to break into the team at Elland Road a move to Kent beckoned and Weston joined Gillingham where he made 144 appearances for the club and went onto win the 2009 play-off final with the club.
Following his departure from Priestfield, Weston enjoyed a six-year spell with Barnet scoring 23 goals in 213 appearances. Weston has been with Chesterfield since 2018 and has already made over 75 appearances for the Spireites.
“THE FINISHER”
Born in Amsterdam, Akwasi moved to England to join Birmingham City, where he settled into the youth system before signing a professional contract with the club in 2011. After being released by Birmingham in the summer of 2014, Akwasi signed for Kidderminster Harriers.
Spells at Solihull Moors and Chester followed before he moved to Gloucester City, where he scored eight goals in nine appearances. He was signed by the Spireites for an undisclosed fee in December.
LAST TIME WE MET
Boreham Wood 0-0 Chesterfield
Tuesday 26th January 2021
Meadow Park, Vanarama National League
Wood’s last meeting with the Spireites came at the beginning of 2021 at Meadow Park, which ended in a goalless draw.
It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game with a shot from Joe Rowley that went just wide of Nathan Ashmore’s goal. And after just 12 minutes of play, it was Rowley who was then forced off the pitch from an injury.
The next near chance came from Junior Morias on the stroke of half time which just cleared the crossbar. However, with just 20 minutes remaining it looked as though the Wood had taken the lead after another shot from Junior Morias which beat Przybek in the Spireites goal, but the offside flag was raised to Chesterfield’s rescue.
