15 March 2021

Boreham Wood v Notts County
Tuesday 16th March 2021, 7.45 pm
Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

THE CONTEXT

Tomorrow evening, Boreham Wood host 6th place Notts County in the Vanarama National League at Meadow Park.

In their recent fixture, the Magpies travelled to Wealdstone and came away with all three points after they won 1-0.

Whereas Wood drew for the third consecutive game after Torquay United came to town on Saturday and the game ended 0-0.

THE FORM GUIDE

THE WOOD

Previous six games (in all competitions): –

Torquay United (A) | VNL |  0-0 D
Woking (A) | VNL |  0-0 D
Dagenham & Redbridge (A) | VNL |  2-2 D
Wealdstone (A) | VNL |  1-0 L
Solihull Moors (H) | VNL |  2-2 D
Bromley (H) | VNL |  1-1 D

In our recent fixture on Saturday, Wood hosted National League flyers Torquay and the game, which was shown live on BT Sport, ended in a goalless draw.

The Gulls started the game on the front foot and forced two early corners, but the Wood defence dealt with the threat well. Wood had a good period of possession midway through the first half with Kabongo Tshimanga, Keiran Murtagh and Corey Whitley causing the Gulls back-line several problems.

In the 26th minute, the visitors were awarded with a penalty after Gus Mafuta was deemed to have pushed Armani Little inside the penalty area, but Ashmore produced a great save to keep the scores level.

Wood dominated proceedings in the second half and looked like the team to score with a notable chance falling to Tshimanga who failed to break the deadlock.

The game ended in a goalless draw for the second time in two games for Wood, and we are now six games without a win.

THE MAGPIES

Previous six games (in all competitions): –

Wealdstone (A) | VNL | 0-1 W
FC Halifax Town (H) | VNL | 1-2 L
King’s Lynn Town (H) | VNL | 2-2
Oxford City (H) | FAT | 3-1 W
Stockport (A) | VNL | 0-0
Chesterfield (H) | VNL | 0-1 L

In their recent fixture on Saturday, the Magpies came away from Grosvenor Vale with all three points after they won 1-0.

Neal Ardley’s side currently sits in 6th place in the National League and if they win their games in hand, they could sit just one point off of the third place.

Despite the Magpies impressive league position, before Saturday’s victory over the stones, they had not won in any of their previous three league games.

The visitors for Saturday’s game have a chance of a Wembley visit this year as they have reached the semi-final of the Buildbase FA Trophy where they will match up against AFC Hornchurch.

The Magpies have the best defensive record in the league conceding just 19 goals in 24 league games so far this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”

MARK ELLIS

Mark Ellis came through the youth academy with Bolton Wanderers but before he could make a first-team appearance, he joined Torquay United.

After the Gulls gained promotion to the Football League in his opening season, Ellis was loaned out to Forest Green Rovers at the start of the 2009/10 campaign.

The defender went on to make 98 appearances for Torquay before he made the switch to League One outfit Crewe Alexandra in 2012.

After spending two seasons with Crewe, Ellis joined Shrewsbury Town and was integral in the second half of the season helping his side gain promotion to League One.

He then joined Carlisle on loan at the start of the 2016/17 season and the deal was made permanent at the end of the campaign.

Loan moves then came in the form of Forest Green and Leyton Orient before he signed for Tranmere in 2018.

Ellis joined the Magpies for the remainder of the season on-loan and the move proved dividends on Saturday when he helped his side keep a clean sheet and scored the winner.

“THE PLAYMAKER”

MICHAEL DOYLE

Michael Doyle came through the youth system at Celtic and signed his first professional contract with the club in 1998.

Before he could make a senior appearance, Doyle signed for Coventry City in 2003 where he spent seven years making over 250 appearances.

The midfielder joined Leeds United at the start of the 2009/10 season on loan and the following year he joined Sheffield United on a permanent deal.

After making 188 appearances for the Blades, Doyle joined Portsmouth in 2015 and was made club captain immediately. He captained Pompey to the League Two title but moved back to Coventry in 2017 for his second stint with the Sky Blues.

In January 2019, Doyle signed for Notts County and is now his sides club captain with experience in abundance making over 800 senior appearances in his 20-year footballing career.

“THE FINISHER”

KYLE WOOTTON

Wootton started his senior career with Scunthorpe United in 2014 and went on to make over 60 first-team appearances.

During his time at Scunthorpe, Wootton went on loan to six different clubs, namely, Lincoln City, North Ferriby United, Cheltenham Town, Stevenage, Halifax Town, and Notts County.

The Forward’s most successful loan spell was with his current club as last season he was the Magpies top goal scorer with 18 goals.

The deal was made permanent at the start of this season and he has proved his worth being the joint-second top scorer in the league with 12 goals.

LAST TIME WE MET

Notts County 0-1 Boreham Wood
Tuesday 8th December 2020
Meadow Lane, Vanarama National League

The hosts came close to opening the scoreline in the early stages of the game with Kyle Wootton causing a threat. Nathan Ashmore was called into action and made an acrobatic save to keep the scores level going into the break.

Wood had the better of the chances in the second half with Sorba Thomas hitting the post and Kane Smith coming close with a long-range effort.

Jamal Fyfield scored the winner in the 71st minute when he headed well into the top corner following a good hold up play from Matt Rhead.
