YOUNG WOOD STILL MOVING FORWARD

9 May 2017

Boreham Woods PASE Academy continued their pursuit for more silverware with a comprehensive 5-2 quarter final Champion of Champions win against a very good AFC Hornchurch side.

They now find themselves having to play another two Cup finals and a semi final within the next week, as the business end of the season starts to reach its finale.

After beating AFC Halifax 3-2 in the last round to progress, Wood went into the game knowing to book their place in the last four they would have to be at their best, against an AFC Hornchurch side that had won their regional league at a canter by 8 points.

Hornchurch in fact started the better side and took the lead with a strike from close range, but with our resilient bunch of youngsters, they again came back stronger, and showed just why they are the National College Champions of England and Wales with three quick fire second half goals. Firstly Alex Morgan who had been very quiet in the first half, arrived perfectly at the back post to finish fantastically from two crosses to turn the game on its head.

Before Ezra Bolt made it three, when he coolly headed home to give the Wood a two goal lead. However to their credit Hornchurch refused to roll over and managed to cut the lead to 3-2 with a header from inside the six yard box.

Yves kpeow was then introduced off the bench and he lined one up from the edge of the area and found the bottom corner with a lovely strike to restore the Academy’s two goal lead and continue his rich goal scoring vein in the big games..

England College winger Sorba Thomas then put the game to bed with a well deserved goal dinking over the oncoming keeper and completed another man of the match display. In all honestly this was another fantastic performance from this group of talented youngsters as they continue to echo the academies ethos of attitude discipline and desire before talent comes to the fore.

Academy head coach Cameron Mawer spoke afterwards ” The hunger and desire within this group is fantastic and amazes me. After last week’s National Cup and regional Cup wins, to go and recreate that and secure a place in our fifth semi final of an already overloaded season is amazing. In regards to this competition we know we still have a lot of work to do if we are going to win it. But we can now focus on our second National Cup Final this Thursday up at Walsall, and expect it will be our toughest challenge. We certainly won’t take anything for granted as its football and we know anything can happen. That said I wouldn’t want to be going into this game with any other group of players and they’ll be ready that’s for sure”
