Wood are out of the bottom three on goal difference after this unconvincing display against average opposition. It was two points dropped on an afternoon that nerves played a great part.
Wood started with good intentions when after five minutes Austin Lipman split the defence with a fine ball for Billy Lobjoit who burst through to face Lloyd Irish in The Gulls goal. His effort though went straight at the shot stopper.
Sam Cox then set up an attack feeding the dangerous Anthony Jeffrey. He sailed past a defender crossing from the left finding Lipman whose low shot back across goal was inches wide of the target.
With no threat coming from the visitors Cox pounced upon some over elaborate footwork from Ash Kington crossing for Lobjoit. His dipping drive went over Irish and the bar, the closest Wood came in a relatively easy opening half .
Wood were gifted a fine opportunity after the interval when a deflected clearance fell for Lobjoit, yet Wood fluffed their lines with Lipman giving the ball away cheaply. Thankfully Jeffrey lit up a dour affair when he received a cross field pass from Matthew Ball. His curling effort from twenty five yards out on the left sailed over Irish and into the net via a post.
With almost the entire second half remaining and little cohesion being shown from the visitors it felt that Wood could build upon the lead to kick start their season. However the side were clearly short on confidence after a run of five League matches without a win and lacked a cutting edge.
Some errant passing left Wood exposed on the counter attack and The Gulls advanced through the middle of the park. Dayle Grubb and Alex Fiddes complimented a run from Ash Kington who played a one two into the penalty area with Nabi Diallo before hitting a low drive beyond an unsighted James Russell.
With only Jeffrey seemingly able to raise the bar for Wood going forward he went desperately close to producing the winner. Seizing upon a half clearance he sent a volley goal bound that was met by the save of the match from Irish.
The last chance of a disappointing afternoon came from Diallo who capitalised upon Graeme Montgomery’s poor control to hit a deflected shot that Russell held to preserve a point that in truth was a scant consolation against a side that were there for the taking.
The result left Ian Allinson, “Disappointed after having three great chances in the first half to claim outright victory. We were going ok until we scored, then the nerves set in and we need to regroup and go again very quickly.”
