WOOD GET THE JOB DONE

9 October 2019

Boreham Wood U19’s travelled to the Gallagher Stadium to face Maidstone United FC U19’s. A win would see progression into the next round of the National League Youth Cup.

After being knocked out in the FA Youth Cup last week at the hands of Maidenhead United, the boys would have seen this as an opportunity to bounce back, as well as to go deep in a cup competition. From the start, the game didn’t offer much for both sides, slow play from either side lead to a lacklustre first half. Maidstone United definitely looked more up for the tie which wasn’t a surprise as their home support spurred them on. The Wood struggled but did have the better of the chances, including a glancing header from Captain Charlie Wickham that just went over the bar.

The second half allowed the game to be a bit more open as Maidstone started to grow in confidence and kept battling hard in attempt to to go in front. However, it was Boreham Wood who were the ones to break the deadlock as they were awarded a penalty which, Academy Player of the Month, Darnell Kithambo slotted away with confidence. 1-0 to the Wood! The rest of the game was well managed and seen out expertly by the Wood youngsters, as Boreham Wood managed to hold on to get the win in order to progress into the next round!

Academy Coach Cameron Mawer had this to say about the game, “I wasn’t overly impressed with the performance, there were lots of different areas we could have done better in, but the result is all that counts and we are in the hat for the next round.”
