FANS FAVOURITE SIGNS NEW DEAL

9 July 2019

Boreham Wood Football Club are delighted to announce that defender Kane Smith has put pen to paper signing a new contract keeping him at Meadow Park until 2021, with another years option taking it possibly up until 2022.

The much-loved wing-back joined Boreham Wood just over two years ago from Hitchin Town and has now signed a new two-year deal with an option of a third year.

Smith spent all of last season on the treatment table after suffering a serious knee injury in the play-off victory over AFC Fylde back in May 2018. Nevertheless the defender has come back strong and fitter than ever and he proved this in the pre-season yo-yo test where he was narrowly edged out by his opposite wing-back Femi Ilesanmi.

On signing the new contract, Smith said: “I decided to commit to the club because with everything I went through last year with the injury, they were right there by my side helping me and my family wherever possible.

“This meant a lot to me, when I was struggling physically and mentally, whether it was the chairman, gaffer, kit staff, players and of course the physio department, they were all amazing.

“It’s a great club to be around, the energy and the ambition was another reason why I wanted to sign again.

“Also, the group of players we have here was a massive reason too, they are an unbelievable bunch of lads who stuck by me last year and always kept me involved and feeling welcome.

“The new lads we’ve got in too just shows where we want to be next year and hopefully we can have a successful season.”

Manager Luke Garrard added his thoughts by saying: “It shows the progression we’ve got to in the length of the new contract. It also shows the commitment from both sides, especially from ourselves to Kane.

“He’s been fantastic for us, it was just a shame that he suffered that nasty injury last year.

“I honestly believe that on his day he is one of the better players at the level in his position. He brings a breath of fresh air, bundles of energy and has great quality in the final third.”

We can’t wait to watch Kane continue to fly up and down the flank kicking on with his development over the next few years.
